My first ever SAK mod!

I was looking for the "perfect" backpacking SAK and couldn't really get what I wanted in a tight package.
The Huntsman was close but was four layers (on the big side for my tastes) and had some "not so useful" tools in a wilderness environment (corkscrew, can/bottle opener, hook).
Don't get me wrong; I find all of those very handy when "car camping", on a casual short hike, or at home, but not on extended hikes.

Basically, I wanted the scissors, the saw, the reamer, at least one blade, and the tweezers into the smallest package possible.

I got myself a used Camper (just for the saw) and a great shape Climber on evilbay (around $10 each), and here's the result:

Specs: 91mm, three layers: Blades (big and small), Saw, Scissors. Reamer (only) on the back, and tweezers in one of the scales. Epoxied black paper micarta scales. 2.7oz, 16mm thick. My climber is 17mm thick; I agree it doesn't sound like a big difference, but for some reason, it looks and feel considerably thinner:

(with Climber for comparison)

Because there's no lanyard ring and no corkscrew, the knife is very comfortable in hand when whittling for an extended period.

All in all, I'm very happy with the result. I learned quite a few tricks doing this mod and I'm sure my next one will be better.
I can't believe the amount of work that went into this little bugger...SAKs modding is not that easy!
It is a lot of fun, though, and very addictive :)

Any feedback, critiques, and questions are more than welcome!

Thanks for looking,

Pierre

Awesome job! Could you outline some of the steps and the tools you used? I am very interested in this. Is it possible to retain the lanyard ring? If I didn't want to make my own scales, can you re-use the old ones? Many thanks!

A lot of people did a better job for SAKs mod tutorial than I'd ever do. I thank them for their help!

Here's some links on the subject:
Different SAKs mods, Excellent tutorial by Gareth UK, there's LOTS of info on SOSAK online but you have to be a member.

Hope this helps...

:eek:No toothpick?You did a real fine job on your mod,looks great:)!Me,I would've made a toothpick slot too:p.

I'll Take it... how much?

kidding aside,Its an Excellent mod! you're very creative and the result is very2 beautiful!... congrats buddy!

Awesome job man. I actually thought it was a stock SAK before seeing the scales more up close

wow really nice job. i tried to do the same thing by taking off the scales from my super tinker and spray painting underneath black...... it turned out horrible. not a huge loss (21 dollars from walmart). now that SAK is my beater knife for now. once again great job.

Yeah, the scales really had to comfort when using the knife...I couldn't see myself using the knife for any extended period of time without them. Now, it's nice and smooth :D

Thanks for all the nice comments guys!

What type and brand of epoxy did you use to install the handles/scales?

Great job! Thanks for the "how to" link. I may have to try something like that this winter ..... one of those days (or weeks ) where I'm snowed in and looking for "a project". ;)

That's a knock out for sure I'm in and will be in touch.
