Hey Guys...

Well I had my first attempt at hollow grinding last night...

Went to my knifemaker Jeff Diotte out of Lasalle Ontario for some lessons.

I watched intently as he skillfully started his first grinds on a blank. I knew right away after his first cut,, this guy was a pro.Nice and straight and even....

Ok it was my turn. He gave me a blank to practice on.

I'll tell you I was scared $hitless standing in front of that buzzing grinder!!!

My first cut was nice and straight and looked really good... The second and third pass of the knife wasn't so easy, as I left several facets along the grind...

Jeff Really made it look easy,, but it wasn't!!

I can see why this is so addicting though and plan on getting some of my own steel to practice on.. It was a real trip.. Thanks Jeff!!!

Eric,
It will take lots of practice, then you will notice you get into a "zone".....This is where your hands are working while you are thinking about gluing the handle on or something!!
I suggest to all that are learning to grind, start on small blades. This keeps the material costs down and confidence up. It's much easier to keep the grinds right on a smaller knife.
Also I found that with my son, using a fresh 36grit belt was a bit scary. I suggest starting out with a worn roughing belt or on a small knife, a finer grit!!
You may not realize it but you just put yourself in deep financial trouble!! I will bet money that within a few months, you will have you own belt grinder!!
