Just got my first Fallkniven. Just the entry level U2. A VERY no nonsense, no frills knife. Very light. A great EDC!! It was hair popping sharp out of the box. I'm pretty new at the knife business but this is by far the sharpest of any knives, Spyderco Persian, Sog, Cold Steel, or Benchmade. I'm a little confused though. Is this a convex blade? The reason I ask is that on the box it doesn't describe a method of sharpening that resembles what I've read about sharpening convex blades. No mouse pad or similar material underneath the recommended very fine flat diamond paper. Got for $57 + shipping. Not sure if I can mention where it was purchased. Will definitely be getting more Fallkniven knives!!

I don't have the U2, but I do have a Fallkniven Thor. It is definately convexed and my box also says something about sharpening with a flat stone.

I too thought that to be a little strange, I mean I know one CAN sharpen convex on a flat stone, but it seems to work so much better with a softer medium.

-Also, you should be able to tell by looking at the edge. A traditional V edge is clearly visible, where as convex should have no discernible edge shoulder.

Either way You've bought a great knife!!!

They look like god knives but I have never pulled the trigger due to their weak warrenty. I prefer a company that back up their products

I have a U2. Not convexed. No, they have a secondary flat bevel. Most U2 owners give them a quick convex with a strop... This helps with woodwork especially.

The U2 is by far one of the best three-finger folders you can buy. The SGPS core holds a wicked edge. I've cut myself pretty deep with it while whittling!

The most appealing aspect is the take apart, clean, torx bolt. Also, the waterproof aspect. Don't oil it though, if you do, only the blade. The locking mechanism and bolt area don't like the oily grunge. Water or air, or cloth to clean....

BryFry,

The Thor is a Monster!! So, how do you go about sharpening it? The U2 appears laminated. Do you happen to know if it is two different types of steel?

paleo......related to your occupation? My Dad was a bryazoa paleontologist.

I might have a take on the sharpening instructions on the box.
The first F1 series and early A1 had flat grind, then the described method worked great and it still will get a dull convex back in shape. However the best methos is the mousepad way.

How to make a U2 convex is rather easy. Just sharpen it with a strop instead of a stone and it will eventually turn convex.

The F1 is VG10 sandwiched between 420J2 so I guess the U2 is SGPS with 420J2. The hard steel in the middle and the softer outside.

The U2 really is a great knife. Have you tried it with a firesteel? It works great because of the sharp angle on the back.

I'm not that good at sharpening it the way it is designed much less change it to a convex blade. I'm working hard at it though on other, lesser knives.

Yeah, it is a monster! especially noticeable if you drop it on yourself edge first like I did ...DOH!

Yes the Thor is laminated VG-10, I sharpen it with sandpaper on leather backing, and finish on a strop. But since it came allready convexed all I have to do is touch it up.

This knife cuts better than anything I've ever owned!!! :D

Congrats, jagger, Fallkniven make a mean laminated blade. That powdered steel in the core does take a little while to sharpen but it also takes a while to get blunt :D

The warranty is normal for Sweden. There are no lifetime warantys here, not a salesargument in this country at all. best I heard is Gränsfors with 25 years but they dont have waranty for abuse and how can axe destroy outherwise. They just follow our rules for consumers safety.

I would invest in a Spyderco Sharpmaker for sharpening. It is hard to screw up using it. Btw, I have a Fallkniven PXL folder arriving today. It also has the SGPS laminated blade.

cutter 17,

The PXL is a beauty!!! Probably will be my next Fallkniven. My only concern is the weight. I think it is >6 oz. A little heavy for a EDC. Let me know what you think. Will this be your first Fallkniven? You will be amazed at the sharpness. I have only about half of the hair on my arms....the other half having been shaven off to show off the sharpness of my new U2. I have an Edge Pro for sharpening but will probably invest in a EF or EEF diamond stone per the recommendation of Fallkniven. Be sure to post when you get your PXL and let us know what you think:thumbup:

Fallknivens can be a wee bit addictive!

That is a SWEET collection!!!

I wish Fallkniven would do more laminated damascus/VG-10 blades.

The damascus isn't laminated with VG10, but with SGPS steel. I agree they should do more of those...

Kind regards,

Jos

I often carry a PXL right rear inner waist band, a standard width belt hides the majority of the clip. Not too heavy for me and I'm a regular build. But, there is only one way you will know if a PXL is too heavy for you... $$$ :D:D

Okay, didn't know you had the Edge pro, great system! I'm thinking about ordering the diamond rods for my Sharpmaker.

Got the PXL yesterday and it has taken the title of the "sharpest knife out of the box" I have gotten! This is the 3rd PXL I have gotten, with the first two having to be sold due to divorce attorney fees. Even when I had to sale them I vowed that when I got back on my feet I would have another one of these, and now I do.

The weight doesn't bother me as I love the solid feel it gives the knife. Of the three I have had, with this one being the third, this one was the most perfect of the one's I had received. The other two had minor problems with the handles being flush with the bolsters. I also love the deep carry clip, even if it is only set up for tip down carry. Of course I had to cover the bright and shiny clip with my standard fare consisting of black 3M Stair Step tape, that, along with the clip being very short to begin with, makes it virtually invisible in my pocket.:D:D:thumbup:

I'm considering the plunge. Finances dictate either the FN-U2 or the FNTK4 with an extreme outside chance I'll spring for the FNTK3TW. It's a big plunge for me, and it will be an EDC. I haven't found the weights, and 3 ounces is the most I will carry.

Convince me that one of them is worth it.

btw, Falkniven seems to have the most sensible ideas of knife design I have seen or I would not even be posting this.
