My first fixed blade, a Dirty Little Bird

I finally made a fixed blade, I've been studying the different f b construction techniques and designing one for my first try. This is not one of them! This one came to me the other night about 3 a.m. and wouldn't leave me alone until I made it. I didn't plan it to have a bird like appearance, just kind of ended up that way.

I've only made screw together folders so it was pretty strange to permanently attach the handle. Many firsts for me making this, convex grind (harder than it looks to get right), clay hardening, peened pins, epoxy and pinning handles.

I hesitated posting this but I thought I'd share my first one, it was a lot of fun to make. I definetly want to make another fixed blade (more traditional looking) but it's back to folders for now, just had to get this one out of my system.

Thanks for looking,
Dave

one of these days I'm going to spend some time learning my camera!!

You do know, that it's cruel and unusual to post pics like this and not give the specifics? :)

What blade steel? How big?

Sorry Danbo, I forgot :)

About a 3 1/8" cutting edge of clay hardened, convex ground 1095

Textured brass bolsters with a copper pin

Stabilized spalted Tamarind scales

8 1/4" o.a. length

That's a great looking knife........follows your theme very nicely. :)

You did good on all of it, IMHO......don't mind Danbo. ;) :D

Dave you are making a lot of folks jealous on your 'first' trials. Good work!

I have a Laguiole knife with a 'bird' likeness. Very elegant, both of these.

Aside from the great knife profiles I see from you, every time I see your work I'm amazed by your choice of wood.

Thank you for the comments, even you Danbo :)

Coop, I was working on a folder when I was rudely interrupted by some health stuff so I couldn't work in the shop for a while. I needed to try some firsts for me to get back in the making mode, I didn't want to mess up this folder.

Beutiful knife, I really like the blade shape. However the wood, IMO, steals the show. Please, if you don't mind, tell me where you got that wood from I really would like some for myself.

Thanks
Jared

Jarad, I honestly wish that I could tell you. I thought I bought it from http://www.alphaknifesupply.com/ but I don't see it listed. I could've bought it at a show, I don't see any tags on the other pieces that I have so I'm not sure. I will keep looking and if I find it, I'll be sure to let you know.

Thanks
Dave
