My first fixed blade! (another killer deal at KTP)

Just got back from Kittery Trading Post again (hey, what can i say, i live a 5 minute drive from the store, i could easily bike there in the summer....) and i found another killer deal, too good to pass up....

I sold my Native to one of my co-workers for $30 (in order to get him addicted to Spydies as well, plans within plans <evil grin>), so i had some spending money for knives, and set a budget for myself of no more than $10 more than i had (upper budget limit was $40)

i'm trying to control my knife spending by limiting myself to what i own already, if i want a new knife, i have to sell one first, that'll prevent me from overspending on my new hobby/obsession, and since my co-worker's now addicted to Spydies, i can sell him the ones i'm tired of, when i tire of them (see what i mean about plans within plans?..... ;) )

anyway....back to KTP....

i usually go there a couple times a week to keep an eye on the used knife counter, as they have some killer deals....

so, tonight, i was looking at a Benchmade 941 in *really* rough shape, the point had broken off, the previous user had obviously used it as a prybar  and there were scrapes and dings in the blade, the coating at the tip was badly worn down, part of me wanted to try to return it to usable condition, to restore it as best i could, and i was seriously considering it, they wanted $35 for it, a little high for the condition it was in though....

so i set it aside and kept looking....

there, on the bottom shelf, a large black-handled fixed blade, still in it's original box, the words on the plastic sheath said KA-BAR.....

the price tag on the knife was $35.....

i had to check it out.....

the salesguy put the knife and box on the counter, and unsheathed the knife, a black Combo-Edge KA-BAR 1211, the blade and handle were *flawless*, *mint* condition, the thing looked brand new, even the box was in great shape, it was obvious it had never been used....

hmm, beat up old Benchmade 941 that needs work and will never look brand new for $35, or essentially mint condition KA-BAR 1211 fixed blade, that has *never* been used, for $35?.....

i think the answer was obvious....

i went for the KA-BAR, after all, i have *plenty* of folding knives, but *no* fixed blades, and you can't beat the good ol' reliable KA-BAR....

It looks brand new because it is brand new. That's not a good-ol' Ka-Bar, it's a brand new Ka-Bar with a kraton handle and kydex sheath.

Still a great deal and a great knife. I have a classic-styled Ka-Bar (with the leather handle and leather sheath instead of kraton and kydex) and my main two complaints against it are that the leather sheath is overly soaked in the leather treatment juice, and that the handle could be grippier.

So the next-gen Ka-Bars, such as yours, should be just about right.

I also have a Ka-Bar Warthog which has a kraton handle and kydex sheath and I really love the handle and sheath. Ka-Bar does kraton handles and kydex sheaths well, IMO. So those two elements in the classic Ka-Bar shape should make for a great user.

Now you will have to buy some more fixed blades to hang out with your Ka-Bar. Once you get a fixed blade after telling youself "I need a fixed blade since I don't have any", you will start saying "I need a smaller fixed blade... and a larger one... and a bowie... and a skinner... and a fixed blade with a half guard.... no guard... a mora... etc...."

Good pics, BTW.

He mentioned that it was a model #1211, which leads me to believe that the box is tagged wrong. Model #1211 is the straight edge black Ka-Bar, the part serrated is model #1212.

This isn't a next-gen Ka-Bar. It's the same basic knife as the leather handled knife of USMC fame but with a Kraton handle. Steel is 1095. The Kraton handled version is slightly lighter than the classic Ka-Bar, for what it's worth.

According to the Ka-Bar website, the next-gen knives are 440A with Kraton handles and a different shaped butt-cap. There's also a D2 version of the next-gen knife (but I don't think it's called that).

Regardless of what it is, it's a wonderful knife. I love my USMC Ka-Bar. Those leather handled knives are beautiful after some use darkens the leather.

I love my kabars.I have 6 different models including 2 usmc models. One new and one that's seen some action somewhere.I bought the oldie at a millitary/antique store that I trust so I know it's the real deal.
Don't you just love getting a great deal on a kickassed knive?I'm shure you'll love yours.

Great score Mac. I haven't been to the Kittery Trading Post since last summer. I think they did some remolding since I was there last. You have inspired me to take a little trip next weekend.

Hey, Great minds think alike!!!! I shop at KTP as well. I spend most of my time looking for used shotguns, revolvers, old holsters, etc., But they do have an awesome knife display as well. I bought a Spyderco there a couple of months ago. The best thing about KTP is that they sell clothes ans SHOES downstairs, so I can always talk the wife in to riding down (I'm an hour north).

Whoops. I didn't mean it was a "Next Gen" Ka-Bar. I was using the general term, not the proper noun. I meant it was a modern Ka-Bar with kraton and kydex, not a modern Ka-Bar of the classic style (leather), nor a true classic Ka-Bar. I didn't mean it was in the "Next Gen" line as I didn't even know that line existed. My choice of the term "next gen" was a coincedence.

Yup I allways stop there also on my way up to my place on Sebago. But this may date me but I remember when you could trade in your deer pelts for a pair of deerskin gloves. My father stated that when they stopped doing that he would never step back in the store again and he never did.

Well then... :p For what it's worth the real next gen Ka-Bars aren't as comfy to use as the classic (in leather or kraton).
