Well, after much thought, I have purchased my first custom folder. Don't know if it's a good thing or Bad. I may have started something. ;)

I aquired this Ken Steigerwalt Auto.

The Mammoth Bark Ivory that Ken used has a creamy light background and streaks of chocolate brown throughout. The auto action is swift and definite once you press on the Gold tab release. Gold pins. Fileworked liners and backspine.

Specifications:
Blade Length : 4 inches
Overall Length : 8 ¾ inches
Blade Steel : Wave Damascus by Eggerling
Handle Material : Fossil Mammoth
Bolster/Guard : Explosion Damascus by Thomas

Kevin, That's a great looking folder. Ken Steigerwalt does a great job. Originally I started collecting folders exclusively. I then got my first Moran Bowie and got into large ABS Bowies and have more of them than folders. I think that you will do it in reverse. Jim Treacy

Kenny's fluting, filework, and fitment is legendary. His knives are always in demand and his 'Best of' awards are many.

I am pleased that you would expand your focus. Dontcha' love the action on that??!! THWACK!

Thanks Jim.

No, I will never lose interest in forged fixed blades. ;) :D

Don Guild is selling some pieces. A great opportunity to get into custom folders offered by a great guy.
Good prices too.

"Hello Fellow Knife Collector,
I have just added eighty-three knives on my website.
You are on my list, and you all are being notified at the same time.
Happy hunting!

We all must keep open minds; and you can teach an old dog new tricks ;) :D

Nice photo Coop....

Kevin, There are plenty of ABS makers who forge great folders, just don't bid on Jerry Fisk's folder at this year's Microshow.

HI Kevin,

Excellent choice. Kenny makes some of the best folders in the world.

Now give John W. Smith a look! :D

Kevin,

Now that you are expanding your horizons, it may be time to unload some of those old fixed blades of yours. Keep me posted! ;)

Best,

P

But I still love ABS Forged Hunters & Bowies, I swear  :D :D ;)

Thanks guys and gal. Big step for an old stubborn guy stuck in his ways. At least I know now by y'alls comments I started with the right one. :D

I do swear though, that you like ivory, as much as I like pearl. I still think the other two were the better get, but you are hooked now, my brother-from-another-mother, and will be getting more folders as time goes on, bet!

They take up less space, and you can actually carry(WHAT?) them for daily usage and appreciation, VS a 10" bowie in an urban environment.

Best Regards,

STeven Garsson

Yes, Kevin, you can have your cake and eat it too:D My first and only custom folder (so far) is a little Moran style ebony scaled forged 1084 lockback that Mark Sentz had been carrying in his pocket for a few months. He decided to let it go for a bit of a discount at the Guild show in '05 and I just had to have it. At the fall hammer-in, I gave it to Kenny Rowe and he made a Cape buffalo pouch for me. Mark told me that he tended to sell a goodly percentage of his folders to the guys at the Safari Club convention.

You are right STeven, I love that ivory. IMO, ancient Ivory is one of the most remarkable natural materials in the earth's history.
First it was part of a massive pre-historic creature (if only it could tell it's story?) and as that's not enough, it then goes into the earth for thousands of years to be transformed into beautiful one of a kind pieces of art.

What, you don't carry your 10" Bowies? ;)

Robbin Hudson, MS once remarked he carried his sheathed bowie with him all the time.

Great in the library for getting the books off the top shelf and it also makes a fine bookmark also. He said some bags of potato chips are stubborn and need a little long persuasion to open.

Be well.

Great choice Kevin! I was eyeballing that piece myself. Ken has a great eye for detail. Enjoy it friend:thumbup:
