I've tried to no avail in the past (call me lazy) to get a friction fire, I've come close but all I got from the cigar was smoke.. Now I think I've got it down-pat.. Here is the sacrifice of a Cedar..

here's the spindle, as you'll see it's cracked out.. that's the heat of friction, remember this is all GREEN wood.

I split the top of bow to accept cordage, then I grooved it to stop cordage from creeping down further and cracking bow out..

Here I notched my handle end and applied a slip knot for easy disassemble of cord to load out more conveniently.

I even continued the natural contour of the wood for the bow and made engravings and also some ancient symbols for fire.. (not shown it these pics)

My kit altogether, I sanded, stained, and lacquered the bow.

The Becker challenge got me going on this, I've tried to get coal in the past to no avail, its easy to give up when you have firesteel:D.. call me lazy but I like an easy fire;)
Above all this was exiting to have an ember burning in my hands that turned to FIRE !!!

If you have yet to do this I encourage you to tackle this and add it to your bag of tricks for the new year......

HAPPY NEW YEAR !!!!

Excellent work! I've yet to accomplish fire by friction, but this is encouraging.

Now you've gone and done it!!!

Now your hooked!!! Mking fire by friction is as addictive as crack.

Congrats,I need to get off my but & start the learning process.
I got the firesteel down last summer.
Friction fire next!

Congratulations!! Once anyone has tried the various fire methods it gives a whole new appreciation to your accomplishment.

Good stuff !! I REALLY need some time in the woods by myself to learn a few of these things. I tend to go with people who want to are not at all interested in bush-craft... just want to sit around and drink beer. WAIT... nothing wrong with that either !

Congrats man! Nothing like that feeling of triumph gotten from creating your first friction fire. Doing it with green wood is even more impressive. I've talked to Rick about a technique he calls "idling" that he uses with damp or green woods to dry the spindle and the socket. I need to actually try this since I live in an often wet environment.

I can't believe you killed a tree! Leave the Cedars alone!!!

Just playing ;)

Great job bro, Now that you know how easy it is, I bet you never leave home with out a lighter again..

:D

It works for softer woods as well. All you really are doing is applying less downward pressure and a quick but steady bow speed. Pretty much cooking the powder you allready have.

I've already had the epa email me and ask me for my address:eek:

seriously though, I would like to say I 'harvested' it as I will put the rest of it to use one way or another.

Congratulations! Its a good feeling. My current fire goal is to be able to walk into the bush, collect and make the fire set and create fire from start to finish. I'm still working on that. I've made friction fire with various materials and methods here at home and it's always a rush to do it.

Getting it right in the bush under field conditions here is a challenge because its all a process of discovery. Information on what woods work for it has been lost here so we're trying to get it back.

Friction fire is not easy, you did a good job. Mac

Congrats to you. I clapped my hands with delight...and happy happy for you...and now I feel all inspired again. I haven't ever gotten one started from friction. And I tried for the first time in 1988...Smoke...yes. Fire...no. If we ever have reasonable weather again...I am off to the woods with my Boy Scout son and determined to make it work this time.
