Ok so tax returns are one their way and I am really itching for a new knife. Not that I need one but ya'll know how it is. Well I don't have a GEC. I have wanted one for a while now just never got around to it. Usually too busy finding nice new old stockmans to play with. Well I am deviating away from the stockman just cause I have so many. And GEC has two knives that are driving me insane. So it is between the GEC Half Congress in Snakewood with long pull or the Dogleg Jack. Both look awesome to me and have me intrigued. Which do you think I should go with?

The Stockman :D

Here's my first GEC, it's in the mail right now (this pic swiped from a dealer, this is not the actual knife):

I thought about it Ian but I wont lie, I love the serpentine frame. The Cubans frame disgusts me. Can't do it.

While I am waiting to be annihilated by Mother Nature with her 60-70 MPH winds and hail and such, I will try to help you decide.

OK, get a quarter (or nickle, penny, whatever). Heads is the Half Congress, Tails is the Dogleg.

Now you are going to flip the coin and let it land on the ground. Remember heads - 1/2 Congress, tails - Dogleg. DO NOT READ ANY MORE UNTIL YOU HAVE FLIPPED THE COIN!

It doesn't matter what it landed on, just what you were hoping it would be right before you saw what it was.

Works for me anyway, and you really can't lose either way.

Is it the dogleg with the clip or the spear for the main blade that you're considering? I wasn't crazy on the clip but the spear blade/barehead setup is a really great looking knife to me.

Corey, I will excuse your heresy about the Cubans :D and offer this advice: if you love a serpentine frame, then by all means go with the dogleg jack. It's a truly beautiful knife.

He's so right. Dogleg's a handsome knife but hurry, they're getting scares unless of course you can tolerate that funkadelic spangle sandpaper on a mushroom trip acrylic:D:eek:

Whichever you get first, you'll be sure to want the other and more, they're that good.

Corey, the same thing happened to me. I picked up the dogleg in ebony with the clip blade. My first GEC and it trumps the quality of all my other newer knives. I'm a stockman guy too and I do miss the sheepsfoot, but the dogleg is riding happy in my pocket. William is right too. they are moving fast. I prefer a clip blade over a spear and the spear barehead with bothe blades having the same, or almost the same profile seems redundant to me. As for looks though, the barehead with the spear is aestetically perfect.

Dogleg! Mine is in the mail- my first dogleg. I'm pretty stoked about it, from all the good things everyone here has had to say about them. What were you wanting it to be right before you looked at the coin? I've noticed as well, that if I flip a coin, there IS one I'm hoping it is.

Go with the dogleg jack Corey. I haven't been this happy with a production knife in a long time.

the two mentioned models are very different in contour. the 1/2 congress is a slender seductress compared to a curvey but more muscular small pattern. i'm surprised that the 2 different width backsprings of the dogleg has'nt been emphasized with more enthusiasm. this a a feature seldom seen on modern patterns. a true matching of the blade tang width with the width of its individual spring. the dogleg is'nt large in length but still a powerhouse in strength. as a user for light office tasks & some cardboard box cutting along with whittling i opt for the sway back congress, the dogleg somewhat shorter is a strong contender for all reasonable comers.--dennis [i love both]

I say dogleg... but I'm a bit biased as these were my first:

No bad choice between those two. Do consider the thickness as Dennis mentioned. If you're used to carrying a thicker knife I'd lean towards the dogleg.

Both. Seriously though, GEC is coming out with a serpentive stockman in snakewood later this month on the #66 frame (per their website).

Of the two you mentioned though, I would go with the dogleg jack. That is not to say the #61s and #62s aren't great knives, I just believe the #56 feels better in the hand for long term cutting. The half-congresses seem to me to be built less for all purpose cutting and more for gentlemen's purposes or whittling, which is fine, it just depends on your intended use.

By all means go with the dogleg, it was my first GEC and I love it . It's the only knife I carry now.

I chose the dogleg with the clip. The blade finish is like a glaze. Really nicely done.
