Hi everyone sorry for the phone pic but I have just finished making my first knife handle out of tortoise kirinite. I've made so many mistakes but hopefully I will do a better job of it next time!

I've got one question I wondered if somebody could kindly answer for me. I've used nuts and bolts to secure the scales but are pins less reliable in terms of fastening?

Thanks for your help! :)

Congrats on your first re-handling. I have only done a few, but have used corby bolts and 24 hr epoxy on mine, and have not had any issues. I would think as long as you are also using a slow-cure epoxy, pins would work just as well as bolts.

Thanks very much! I'll try the pins as well in that case I really want to try mosaic pins so hopefully that will bode well for me :)

Many knives rely more on the adhesive/epoxy than the pins to keep the scales on.

Mosaic pins would really dress those handles up or even some brass pins.

Relying on any adhesive to keep handles on is not a good idea.
Using mechanical fasteners insures the handle is secure and you don't need glue.
Mosaic pins offer little in the way of structural integrity. They are thin tubing filled with epoxy and wire. They can't be peened.
Mosaic pins were cool-25 years ago.

Nice work on the handle Kaizo. Nothing teaches like experience.

As far as personal taste goes, it's just that- personal taste. Bottom line is- it's YOUR knife, do what YOU want with it. All that matters is what YOU like. In my opinion, the preferences and personal taste of total strangers shouldn't factor into it.

As far as using epoxy, I'm sure it would work just fine. After all, it's not like you are going to be using that knife to chop down trees or pry open doors.

Thank you all very much for the reply! :)

From the general feel of the feedback I think it may be best for me to try some mosaic pins or brass for this knife and any other bigger knives like a chopper I should use a mechanical fastening pin... I should also epoxy the scales.

Well looks like I have to go grab another knife to do more scalemaking!!

Thank you all very much for your help! :)
