While browsing E-Bay last week for some WWII theater knives, I stumbled upon my first custom hatchet. I found, for sale, a Ron Welling forged Scagel Style Hatchet, made in 1997. Overall length is approximately 22" and the head is 4"x7"x1" thick. Ron used Caribou Antler for the handle end with leather, brass, black fiber spacers, and two pieces of dyed red wood. It also came with a hand laced leather cover. Although there are some pepper marks on the blade, it appears to be unsued! Ron's mark at the time was:
19 WELLING 97 (in block Olde Englsh). If you knew what I paid for it (and was the only bidder during a 7 day auction) you wouldn't believe me anyway!!!
