I finally tried my first "Hawk" what do you think.
Question:Are there any set rules on how big they are supposed to be ?and is this one to small?
Steel:wrought iron from a old wagon rim with steel center from a old hay rake tine for the cutting edge.
cutting face is 1 1/2 inches wide
7 1/2 inches overall
Curly Maple handle that is 19 inches long ( I haven't completely finished it yet )
Strap around the handle is 3/4 inch wide
View

Thanks,Bruce

Yes it's a bit on the small side.
I have one made from cast bronze that's purported to have been cast in the original English mold.
I have had it for a little over 40 years, it's a pipe style 'Hawk with a 2 1/2" cutting edge.
A similar one I have that's made from cast iron is also a 2 1/2"
cutting edge.
The bronze one is 7 1/4" oal and the iron one is 7 3/4" oal.

My cuz has made some with about the same width edge as yours and with a longer spike.
They have been pretty popular.

Many of the old War'Hawks had 4" cutting edges and a few were 5" or a tad more. My favorite's out of the several I have are 3 1/2" to 4" cutting edges, one is a double bit style made by my cuz.
HTH.

Really nice looking work! I've seen them all different sizes. What matters the most to me is the overall balance, and you pulled that off. I bought my first Tomahawk two weeks ago:I'm hooked.

Bruce, that's fantastic. The proportions look perfect to me, very agressive and authoritative.

Hi Bruce,

Very nice. In terms of cutting edge, I would think 2.5" to 3.5" would be my ideal to actually function as a chopping tool. As a self-defense 'hawk, well 1.5" cutting edge is more than enough.

Here is a picture of it completed,Just some more oiling to finish the handle but otherwise it is done.

Nice hawk, Bruce. Will you be offering these for sale soon? Also, nice cable damascus blade on page 39 of the April Blade Mag.

Dan

Yes it was nice to see your face in the April issue. Did you make the hawk with the power hammer? My one and only was forged from a yard sale ball pein hammer. Im not very proud of it. Bruce

I have 2 on order at the present,They are a little bigger than this one so it is availabe at this time.Cost for them at this time is $200.00 each.
I forged the piece of wagon rim down with the power hammer but the rest was done by hand. This one is a little ruff, but it is the first.Plus I figured that if I was going with a perioed piece as a tomahawk is The ruffness would just add to its looks.
Thanks for the compliments on the magazine picture and knife.
Bruce
