I have a wonderful 15" AK by Sher, with wood handle. I am absolutely delighted with it! I've been checking the mail every day waiting for it to arrive.

I'm glad there was no one home when I got it, because I was laughing like a maniac

haven't had a chance to test it out, I had to get out of the house almost as soon as I unwrapped it. It's with me in my bag right now, but I won't get to take it out to the wood lot until tonight. And yet, I'm already thinking about getting a bigger one, like a full GRS...

Another HIKV victim? I hope not! I can't afford a disease like that. :(

Welcome.Same thing just happened to me a few days ago with my first, a 16.5" Chiruwa Ang Khola. Awesome blades. I am also planning my next purchase. Im glad I did'nt discover HI sooner, or else I probably would not have been able to buy my house!:D

Welcome Krazeryu:)

The 15" AK is a great intro khuk. It does a lot of stuff well without giving up strength. I keep one in my truck as a crashaxe. Not to stoke the flames, but once you see how well that AK chops you'll want another. Also, the full size GRS is a great wood felling/clearing khuk. Heavy, but it will work all day. One of my favorites:)

New to the virus myself. Lets list the first month acquisitions:
-2 Indian Khukrappies
-Panawal Special and Mini Panawal from Khukuri House (very nice)
-Chiruwa AK by Kumar (wonderful)
-Badune Special by Bura (Sweet)
-Waiting for 18" GRS (Waiting...............)

You are hooked. Face up to it. Do searches on how to hide the evidence from your spouse. And from now on be at your PC from 1:30 - 4:00 hitting refresh constantly for Yangdu's post. Thats where you get the great deals that enable more spending. Gravy...

Don't forget to give us a field report (read: we are all sick and need field reports to hold off our withdrawl symptoms, if only for a few minutes:D ) we love field reports, field reports are gooood.

Welcome to the Cantina/Psycho Ward Kazeryu!!!!:D

Congrats on your *first* khukuri.;)

Well, turns out I'm going to be busy tonight, so no wood lot for me. I did have a go at some very seasoned maple we took off the tree in the front yard. It's been toughening up in the garage for about 2.5 years now.

Splitting works like a dream, but chopping wasn't quite was I was expecting. 1-1.5" branches gave me chips all over the place, taking 4 or 5 chops to go through. Of course, this is my first time using a khuk and I'm not exactly in shape. I'm interested to see how it deals with softer, green woods. I have high hopes for my little guy.

I do have one question -- can someone suggest a good method of cleaning off sap? I didn't have to worry about it tonight since the wood's been sitting for so long, but I don't want gunk getting into my sheath tomorrow/friday.

How heavy is it? The 15" AK (like all of them) can vary quite a bit.

My "one khukuri" is a 15" AK villager. Fighter, chopper, travel companion.

Can't wait to get my 18" AK. With the 15" and the 20" B (Beast) AK, I'm covered.

wait... do they make a 12" AK?

and welcome... laughing like a maniac goes with the territory....

muahahahahaha! <WHACK!>

3/8" thick, 10" blade and about bang-on 15" overall. I don't have anything that will measure weights this small, so I can't really give you a measure on that just yet. I don't consider it to be very heavy, but I don't really have another blade of this type to compare it to.

Congratulations and welcome Kazeryu...

Read the safety thread.

I think you made a great purchase, one which can fill a huge variety of needs/uses in your life.

Take your time...check your cutting angle, the way you use your arm or your arm/wrist, or your arm/wrist/fingers to snap the blade into the wood. The blade edge sharpness and types of edge make a difference, as well.

Watch out for your leg...an object in motion tends to stay in motion, unless stopped by a femoral artery, or other outside force.

Nice purchase.

Work on other branches cleans blades, as does almost any turpentine/acetone type cleaner.

I don't worry about keeping my working blades shiny. They get cleaned up in the sink with a scotch-brite pad. I might use some soap or hand cleaner too, depending on what's on the blade. They don't get babied, I just clean them.

Of course, if you want to keep them looking like they did when they came out of the box, another method and additional effort is required.

Welcome, and I know what you mean about the laughter; I just grinned and smiled and maybe even chortled a little when I held my first HI khuk and realized this was a hand made, authentic instrument of great beauty and usefullness. A delight.

Howard is right about a cleaning pad, but he uses his khuks. If you want them kept mirror shiny, you'll have to decide how much of the finish you wish to protect and in what way.

Personally, the idea of maintaining the mirror finish does not appeal to me. But there are forumites who actually use and will keep the metal tidy.

A 600 grit sandpaper works good too- leaves a more satin finish that is easier to maintain than HI's original mirror look.

You'll learn what you prefer. Congratulations again.

Yeah, I'm not planning on keeping the mirror polish -- that's more work than it's worth to me. But I'm up here in Canada, so there's an awful lot of pine trees around... and anyone who's had a run-in with pinegum will tell you, it's nasty stuff!

We used to cover up the cars with tarps when we went up to the cottage, because the pine gum would drip onto the cars and leave permanent marks after the sun baked it on a bit. An ice-storm a few years back cleared the trees around the driveway a bit more, so we don't need to cover things up these days, but still -- anything which can permanently marr the tough stuff they put on cars is something to be respected.

Anyway, thanks for the tips, guys. Hopefully I'll be giving things a whirl either tonight or friday, weather permitting.
