My first "high end" knife"

I just dug this out of a box to take a picture for another thread, and decided to share my story of it.

I don't know if this Kershaw Ti-ats 34 knife is still available, but I got it when I was about 12 or 13years old (11 years ago). My friend and I were wannabe mcguyvers/rambo guys, and each had a few knives that were mostly bucks and flea market knives. So one day my friend comes to me with a page torn out from a heartland america catalouge with this knife. We were so convinced that it was the greatest knife on earth just by the description of it, that I showed it to my dad and told him jokingly that I wanted it for my upcoming b-day. I didnt really forget about it, I just assumed it was just a dream to have such a high performance knife that it would never happen, but I thought about it every day all day for the next 2 weeks. So.... come birthday dinner at outback steakhouse, after about 25 minutes of sitting at the table, my food comes, and I unroll my napkin only to find it sitting there with my outback knife and fork. It took me about 10 full seconds before I realized what just happened, but once I did, I can not describe the feeling of seeing it there in front of me in real life. My 12 year old mentailty told me that I was holding the hope diamond in my hand. I carved my name into about 30 different trees around my property (about 15-20 feet up of course). Then lost it for about 1 year. I found it when I was walking through a part of our property that I had only walked on about once a year, and happened to see it stuck into the top of a stump. I totaly forgot that I stuck it there for some reason. Anyway, I gave it a throrough blade-de-rusting, and that was about it. The frame is all titanium, and the blade cleaned up really well, basically like new.

Since then I have had many other knives, but this one is the one that remains in my special keepsake box for life.

I've seen a plainedge version at a local gun shop. If it's there in a month I might get it. How has it held up over the years?

That's a Kershaw Starkey Ridge. It's a companion to the Kershaw Talon, similar materials/construction but the Talon is a hawksbill. I have one of each, but the Starkey Ridge I just got recently. They are off the market for years now, but sometimes one shows up. There are G-10 versions also.

A GREAT knife.

I have the g-10 version. I picked up cheap. It may have been one of the best deals ever. Ats 34 blade, smooth action, great lock up. I bought my brother the Talon version and it took him about 10 minutes before he cut himself with it.

ps. great story by the way...I love when a knife has a connection to my past.

That is the Kershaw model 1410ST. It was first introduced in the summer of 1997 and was the first real 'high tech' knife for Kershaw. I had one and I thought it was cool how you could flick it open with a bic lighter type of action. The Titanium handle models like yours retailed for $140 back then which was a good bit of $$ for a production knife and they did not sell very well because of it. I got them for $70 which was still considerable. There were 4 models with that blade and the Talon with a claw looking blade. It is a pretty cool knife and very sturdy IIRC.

I have an old G10/ATS34 Starky Ridge. Loved that knife, carried it for a few years. It's on the shelf now, supplanted by newer and better, or at least newer, but I take it out now and then. The handle has great ergos, the blade has a great shape. Never much liked the "laser cut shoulder" for opening, I just thumbed it open.

Nice to find an old friend like that!

vjb, one of the Talon models you mentioned had a bottle opener in cut in the blade spine. Made in 1996 and 1997, it was unintentionally the very first waved knife! Emerson did theirs in 1999, I believe.

For how much I used and abused it as a kid, it is in PERFECT mechanical condition even after the year it spend outside.
