I managed to buy a "blem" from Bill on Thursday. I got the 18" AK by Kumar and it arrived today. Dang, thats a hefty knife and sharp too. I am impressed and really like the knife. Overall, it is a nice piece of work, I'm thinking about slicing something,,,,,,,

The only problem is that as it sat on the coffee table one of my buddies pulled it from the scabbard and sliced a nice neat 1" cut in the leather. Any fix suggestions for that, since it must have happened to someone before.

I understand what you mean about needing more than one,,,lol

That happened to my WW2 and I just left it as is. Hasn't given me any trouble.

It would be an involved project, but you might want to try rewrapping your wooden scabbard shell in rawhide and then put a leather or buckskin outershell on it.

I've talked to some people that say they boil rawhide dog chew toys (new, unchewed) to soften up the rawhide and use it.

But then again, there's always the Sarki Shop. Looking at the sheath that I got with mine, I can see why the Sarki Shop is in business.

The sheath that came with my Khukuri was OK, but it wasn't in the same class of workmanship as the quality of the Khukuri. The leather near the bottom of the back of the sheath, just before the leather dissappears under the brass piece, was cut too short to be sewn completely together so they just tried to sew it together, stretching the thread holes to point of almost tearing - sloppy.

I really like the look of the Sarki Shop's work, especially the beefed up Sasquatch frog and the camo scabbard covers.

Another option is Kydex. Kydex is one of those pleasent little benefits of living in the 21st Century.

For a top quality Kydex sheath, check out this guy, Sheath Mechanic The guy who runs Sheath Mechanic is a knife fanatic who knows his stuff and he's also familiar with Khukuris. He can do your sheath in black, desert tan, or olive green. He can also mold sub-sheaths onto the main sheath for holding smaller items like hones (or Chakmas), multi-tools, smaller knives (like Kardas), etc.

Very good suggestions, but an important point was missed. Non-knife savvy people have a disturbing tendency of unsheathing a knife by grabbing the handle and yanking until it comes out. I've had more than one Scandinavian style sheath cut by some "Alpha Hotel", who'll go, "hey,(yank)that's sharp". Well no duh Einstein. Point is, be careful who you let handle your knives and you won't have to become proficient at sheath repairs.

Do you have a preferred wire.

Seems like iron or steel utility wire (non-galv) would
blend into the look of the scabbard very well.

OTOH, brass, copper, or other types could give a very nice
decorative look if done properly.

Maybe some nylon 'zip' ties to add a modern touch. :D

Seriously.

Dean, I've seen it done with copper wire and it looks nice. It also ages well with a nice patina.

1. Kill your friend.

2. Fix it. If it's a slice, use superglue and tension, keeping in mind that very few khukuri sheaths have fingers as adornments. You've had the thing for what--two days and somebody hurt it? Make other people read the safety thread...this is not a good trend.

3. After your initial fix, use the knife carefully and consider alternatives to the sheath repair. Right now, you are focusing on the wrong element of the tool. Carefully, explore its utility.

Eventually, you may want to repair/replace/remedy the sheath issue. At the moment it is cosmetic.

4. Bury your friend in someone else's back yard. Rusty has some folks who live down the road from him who could use a life-lesson.

enjoy the trip.

I'm thinking 15" WWII is the next purchase, when funding allows. I have a pending trip to Norway that I need to save some cash for. We are going to blow up a runway and fix it in less than an hour then watch the unluckiest pilot in Norway land on it. I'll bring a camera just in case we make a 14 million dollar mistake.

My side kick is lucky to have all his fingers, I'll get the fix taken care of asap. I would have been more upset if he was dripping stupidity on my carpet.
