I just purchased my first Khukuri, a 15" Ang Khola, and I have a funny feeling that it won't be my last :) . I'm very impressed with the unique shape and the apparent workmanship that went into making this very sharp, functional knife.
Any suggestions as to what my next purchase should be would be greatly appreciated. I would like to get something with a longer blade. I was checking out the swords, and the The BirGorkha Tarwar and the Tibetan Sword look very interesting.
Are all of the Khukuris on HI basically the same quality?
The reason that I ask is that I noticed that the 30" Sirupati at $115 (I know it's on sale) is less than many Khukuris with smaller blades .
Thank you all ,in advance, for your input.

All HI's are of the utmost quality. No questions here. And if you have a defect of any sort, Uncle Bill will replace it automatically. Can't beat customer service like that!

What kind of swords do you like? If I'm not mistaken, my dream sword is still for sale. From the new year deals, the Gladius-like sword. 245 bucks or something. Beautiful. But you may want something bigger or a different style.

Really, IMO, you can't go wrong with any HI. Just decide on which styles you like and what you want to use it for.

There are plenty of khukuris with longer blades to choose from. A few questions: What kinds of chores do you plan on doing with your khukuri(s)? How large and/or physically fit are you? Some info will help us help you decide on what model khuk to get next. It'd be best if you use your 15" AK for awhile as it is one of the general purpose khuks and will help you decide on what you're looking for in your personal ideal khuk(s).

no experience with the tibetan sword

the Himalayan-katana wants to fly & slice

the HI Tarwar is an excellent, hefty chopper
though not really intended to chop wood
This was a war blade
It makes a great 'heavy' machete

I have a 25" sirupati
& have not yet mastered it's handling
the bend in a khuk over 20-21" becomes cumbersome to me
it likes to turn in the hand
a few others swear by these longer khuks
& describe proper handling in terms of less strength, more technique

for your next purchase I'd suggest any Chitlangi
My personal favorite all-round
17"-21" is the common range of overall length for this model

But everyone has their own favorites for their own reasons

2nd recommendation
Look for something around 18" that has a shape you like
you'll be very surprised how the extra 3" or so past 15"
will add to the perceived size once it's in hand
Also how much better a chopper

3rd recommendation
find a pic of one that grabs you
follow your heart
they're all good
they're all different

Thanks guys for your input. Being disabled, most of my knife collection.all of which are quite functional (Busse's, Randall's, Microtech's, etc.), are safe queens, only to be handled and admired.
As Dean said, "find a pic of one that grabs you, follow your heart, they're all good, they're all different".
The swords and the 30 inch Sirupati look very interesting. I'm pretty sure that one of these will be my next purchase.
I think I'm hooked.

My Tibetan Sword is very nimble, well balanced, with controllable weight.

The 26 inch Sirupati I have is pretty heavy in comparison. More for chopping.

I also have a 20" Sirupati. It's fast, nimble and good for chopping too. If I were you I'd get the 20" Sirupati, a 21" Gelbu Special or a Tibetan Sword for something different and still controllable. I wouldn't use the sword to chop wood though, because it seems like the wrong tool for the job. The machete - style Tarwar could do that without making excuses, but IMHO the other swords should be treated like swords.

Congratulations on the 15" AK. To my mind these are the most useful Khuks: they have the best combination of size, weight and utility.

Thanks! :D :D

It's been really cool lurking over the past two days, and seeing everyone is pretty much still here. I'm sorry to hear about Walosi, and I'm still catching up on news of others around here. How are you holding up?

Thanks PhilthyGeezer for your suggestions. Is the Tibetan Sword that you have the long or short version?

Congrats on your new blade! My first was also a 15" AK. I really like the Sirupatis and Heavy beasts too like the 5 pound 25" AKs. :D

Since you are into collecting, may I sujest a Kothamoda! They are very sweet!! :D

No worries,

It's the short version, and I reckon that the taper on the blade helps the balance as well. It's pretty nimble.
