Hello,
I am new to the forum as well as the Khukuri. Last week some co-workers and I were having a discussion regarding what we would put in our "go bags" if we were only allowed 5 items. Long story short one of my items was an axe. One of my men suggested a Khukuri to take the place of an axe. I had never heard of this mystical weapon/tool. I began researching the khukuri and decided that if I were to own one that I wanted it to be a genuine Khukuri. At first I was considering Cold Steel, Ka-Bar, and Khukuri House. I stumbled upon this web site and was able to gather a plethora of information just by reading through all of your posts. Needless to say I made the right decision going with HI.
Let me first start off by saying what awesome customer service I received from Yangdu. I emailed her last Wednesday with some questions about the products. She responded to me within 20 minutes!!!! 20 minutes.... Wow. That is super fast. Being that I am an infantry Soldier she recommended the BAS Khukuri. I was actually contemplating buying either the BAS or the WWII model, so after she gave me the recommendation I was sold. I wanted one with the neem wood handle and she was able to quickly locate a very beautiful piece that she had in stock. The product shipped out on Thursday and it was in my hands by Saturday. That is 4 days total. From when I initially emailed her to the product in my hands. Let me say that I don't think I have ever had such a pleasant online purchasing experience.... ever. I know that you all are aware of the awesome customer service which is why HI has such a wonderful reputation, but I just wanted to mention it in this review because it deserved merit. Now as for the product.
As others have stated, you really need to hold one of these amazing knives in order to really appreciate the craftsmanship, beauty, and down right BADASSNESS that this thing is. I fell in love with it the second it came out of the box. First thing I did when I took it out of the box was take it outside. Made some short work of a few limbs in the back yard and then I used it to baton some wood blocks in the firewood pile. Awesome. Did exactly what it was intended to do. Kicked ass. Anyways, I will not go into a whole lot more detail on the functionality of this piece. I need more experience to develop a better techinique. Additionally I can say that I will most likely not be using this to cut firewood. I would say the BAS would make an excellent camp knive for small brush, fileting, cooking, and other various camp jobs. I will take this with me to the field for further testing. I will also take this with me when/if my unit deploys if I am allowed to.
I would also like to add that I finished the handle today with TUNG oil. It really brings out the grain of the wood, while penetrating it very well to protect aginst the elements. I prepared the surface using 400 grit sandpaper (lightly) and some steel wool. I put about 4 coats of it with about 2 hours in between each coat. For those of you wondering what a good method is to finish the handle, I would definitely recommend the Tung Oil. It is sold in Lowes or Home depot for around 8-10$ a can. It can be applied with a rag, a brush, etc.... Additionally I thought I would add a good way to polish the blade. After my initial "testing" it left my blade with some light scratches and it dulled the mirror finish. First I went over the entire blade with steel wool. Then I went to AUTO ZONE and purchased a headlight restoring kit by Turtle Wax. These kits are cool because they come with 4 little pads inside that are extremely fine grit for buffing. I used some Rubbing compound and then some polishing compound and viola!!!! Shiny new blade finish. Anyways, I have read about several products and techniques on how to care for the blade, but I thought I would try something new and it worked like a charm. Enough rambling......here are a few pictures of my first Khukuri. Enjoy. (hopefully the links work)
