Hi all, i have been stalking BladeForums for the past few months, and in September i finally worked up the courage to make my own knife, from start to finish, so here it is.

(i couldnt figure out how to get the picture to display so i added a link, i hope that isn't against the rules..)

I made the knife out of ats-34, which I bought from Texas Knife, along with the micarta, and the hardware are nuts and bolts from the local true value. But I still need to send in the knife for heat treat, and I will be doing that in a few days.

Hey great knife! That handle looks comfy too. Get it heat treated and finished up and let us know how it performs.

Welcome to BF!

to fast14riot thank you, i love the handle, although i accidentally made it a little bigger than i planned, i still like it a lot, and the micarta adds a nice heft to the blade :) and i definitely plan on commenting on how well it performs after heat treat, it should make a nice utility knife.

to blandies, thanks, i think its good for a first knife, but i took the picture of the nice side, the other side has a messed up plumb line, and the blade geometry is sort of askew, but i am impressed with how well i did, and i exceeded my expectations with it.

Hey its much easier to deal with a handle that's too big than one that's too small! Did you sharpen it already? If so you will need to take it back to a blunt edge for heat treat. I don't know how thick of an edge is required for ats-34 but working on a sharpened blade is never a good idea.

yeah thats true, and i sort of like having a little extra handle to work with. i put a rough edge on it to see how it would look but before i started working with it i blunted it, but thanks for the tip.

It looks pretty good

thanks, i like it a lot also, and thank you so much for hot linking it, could you show me how to do that, (or provide me with a link to a tutorial)

put "
" at the end.
i tried that but it didnt work, but i may have submitted the picture in a less internet friendly format, DA accepts just about anything, thanks for the tip and compliment :)

to mgysgthath, no, i did it free hand with a worn out sanding belt, and a wood saw (which cuts through micarta nicely) although the sanding took quite a while.

yeah i have been thinking about it, and i like my lanyard on my EDC, but i dont know how well it would work on a fixed blade, so i'v been thinking about adding one.

Forgive me, but how do you heat treat without melting the handle? Or is the handle not permanently attached?

I'm making the assumption that the handle is removable, based upon the philips head bolts I see. Are the nuts inset into the handle on the other side?

I always refer to such things not as errors but as "character marks"

I like the knife. Great job!

yeah the Phillips head bolts come right off, and i countersunk both sides, so nothing sticks out from the micarta.

putting it that way, my knife has more personality than a wild stallion :p

So I got my knife back from heat treat on Monday, and I am impressed, it took me a while to sharpen up, but now I got it sharp enough for me to use while wet shaving, and i love it. I also have some new photos to share. The knife came back with a really nice burnt orange post HT color, which i love, but i thought sending it in that i would have to scrub off scale and other crap, so i never sanded it past 220 grit :( . also there are a few scratches from HT that weren't there when i sent the knife in, but all in all i love the knife.

Here's the pretty side. (although for some reason all the pictures turned out grainy.)

Here's the ugly side, if you look close at the plumb line you can see why its the ugly side.

and Here's a closer look at the ugly side.

I had loads of fun making the knife, and i ordered some 1084 from Aldo the other day, and i have some new ideas to work with now.
