My first knife BK-2

Hi everyone.

My BK-2 is my first knife, not including my kitchen set.
I'm very confused about edge angle. When people talk about a 20 degree angle do they mean 20 degrees on one side of the blade making a total of 40 degrees both sides of the blade combined? Or are they talking about 20 degrees both sides combined and making it 10 degrees on each side of the blade?

Also, I purchased a spyderco sharpmaker to keep my BK-2 nice and sharp. What angle on the sharpmaker should I use for it, 30 or 40 degrees?

I tried searching for the info but couldn't find it. So please forgive me if these questions has been asked before.

Thank you very much.

You won't be disappointed by the Becker. Edge angle is usually 30-40 degrees inclusive, meaning the total of both edge bevels. When you first use the Sharpmaker, be prepared to spend alot of time reprofiling the edge to match the sharpmaker's angle. Try the sharpie trick. Those angles may or may not be the same. The 40 degree angle is what is normally used for the edge, the 30 degree angle is most commonly used to take some steel off the shoulders to make it easier to sharpen.

My sharpmaker advice:
-get the diamond rods
-keep the stones clean
-more strokes, not more pressure
-keep at it

yup - what NTS said.
20 degrees on a side = 40 degrees total.
also - you picked a good sturdy knife, you should get a lot of use out of it.
welcome to the forums!

Welcome and congrats on the Campanion, it will be your best friend, I promise. Like the other posts said, its some sound advice. Best thing to remember, is that your not gonna hurt it. Honestly, you can't, short of a cutting torch or band saw. Practice makes perfect, and don't be afraid to get in here and use the forums. There is an unlimited supply of knowledge here for the asking.

Knife edge and geometry are one and the same, some convex, others sabre or V edge. Its a personal preference for either. You have to find that out for yourself. I sharpen my BK2 on a 50 degree inclusive angle. I like it that way for tough work, and less likely to roll, chip or dent the edgee. Scalpels and razors usually have a 20 degree inclusive edge or less, thin knives like fillet knives, 25-30 inclusive. My BK2 is a workhorse, doing things that I don't want my other knives to do.

Be sure and read the faqs, and come see us over in the Wilderness Survival and Skills forum, you won't be disappointed.

Again, welcome to Bladeforums, the Beckerforums, and knife owners in general.

Hello Mr. Becker

Thank you for the great advice on keeping the stones clean, I will definitely use the dishwasher. I also want to thank you for making the BK-2. I've been using it everyday since I got it. I'm running out of trees in the backyard, may have to go over to my neighbors yard. hehe. This knife is indestructible I may never need to purchase another knife again.

Thank you Mr. Becker, and to everyone who replied to my post.

Yeah you do. You'll need a 9, ESKABAR, 7, Tactool, MC, and some micarta grips. You need them all. We all do. LOL Moose
