After browsing youtube videos and reading up on knife making for months I finally got around to ordering a small piece of 1084 steel back in February with the intention of making my first knife as a present to my Dad for father's day.

I work away from home for weeks at a time so it's taken me a little longer than expected to get this far. Here is my timeline;

I did the rough cut with a grinder but keep about 1/4" away from my template lines. Everything else was done by hand files.

Made up a make-shift jig to file an even bevel

Heat treat and bake (scrubbed all oil residue off before placing in oven so Wife wouldn't kill me)

A work colleague suggested the lansky sharpening system and I am glad I got it - knife is quite sharp!

Rough Handle

Just need to glue the handle in place and add some sort of clear coat to the wood to help protect it, shine up the ends of the pins and then it's all done.

I have really enjoyed the process and have already started on my next one;

Template (forgot to take a picture of the rough cut before travelling out of town)

My first Micarta out of construction paper. It's not perfect but looking forward to working with it and learning from my mistakes.

I am officially addicted. Need to save to buy a decent belt grinder to speed up the process a little :cool:

Well done! Can't wait to see #2.

Thanks man!

Looking at some of the other "firsts" here it probably doesn't hold a candle to them, but i'm pretty proud of the way it turned out despite it's flaws and I think it will be appreciated. I'm out of town working for a few weeks and can't wait to get home to continue working on the second one which will be a general purpose camping knife for myself.

How long did it take to do the grinding for the bevel? Looks great man

I used hand files with a home made jig for the bevel. I would say it took me about 15-20 hours to do all of the shaping on the steel after doing a rough cut with a grinder.

Thanks for the feedback! Already started on my second knife (a bushcraft). I plan on using the homemade micarta I posted earlier for the handle.

I am officially addicted. I need to start saving for a decent belt grinder to cut down on some of the labor.
