a friend is letting me work out of his shop since its still cold here in ohio. i am making him a knife next so i needed to get warmed up first using my disc sander.

i have been fine tuning the handle and i'm not sure its quite right. what do you guys think? the blade is 13 overall and the cutting edge is right at 8". the handle is going to be neoprene and will be 5" long and 1 1/4" at the widest point. the steel is 3/16" 1075.

My first thought on looking at the blade was "ice skate". Don't know why, that was just what I thought.

I like the curves of the underside of the handle. The hard angle on the top is somewhat less appealing to my eye, though. I'm not smart enough to comment on the utility of the blade shape, but I do think the hollow grind looks sexy.

I agree with tryppyr on the hard angle on the top of the blade I would round it off. Otherwise it looks good to me.

an ice skate :p:D. i kind of see that too now that you mention it.
i changed the shape several times when profiling it out. the grind is not hollow but a cross between a ffg and a convex. this one is not a chisel grind like most of my knives are.

i was wondering if i should round off the top of the blade instead of the somewhat sharp corner and i think i will now. like i said, its almost ready to heat treat and i'm wanting to get everything done that i'm going to do before then.

AFIK Richard's grinds are flat or convex, because he grinds on a disk.

EDIT - didn't see Richard's reply with the same.

well i fixed the spine some. how does it look now with the point gone?

i talked to my buddy who plasma cuts my steel into strips and helps me with my heat treat. i showed him the forge and told him i was going to use it to do my ht. he said he would still do my ht with the cutting torch since i have good luck doing it that way so maybe next week i'll have it done :D.

i put the blade on a surface plate a few weeks ago and ran a dial indicator just above the edge to see how much difference there was between each side. i was amazed that from the tip back 3" along the edge was only a few tenths thicker than the left side. not bad for freehand grinding by eye i guess :D.

richardj,

It's a serious matter!
