Hello everyone, ive been lurking for about a month and last week I decided to make my first knife, its still a work in progress and I need to build a filing jig to grind my bevel.
Ive used nothing but a hacksaw, files, sandpaper and a ton of elbow greese on this knife. Its made out of 3/16 1095 steel. Let me know how im doing.

Welcome. Good for you on getting into knifemaking!

What is you intended application for that blade? What do you expect to use it for?

I honestly dont have an intended application for it, I just sat down drew a design I liked and had at it. I really just wanted to see if I liked the hobby first before making a practical design

Cool! Have fun and make sure to show us pics as it progresses! When its done, use it before you make the next one...which I bet you will do. :)

To be honest I'm not sure about the oblong tip on it. It seems as though that shape would be most conducive to chopping but it doesn't look like it has enough length for that. The big belly on it also looks like it might be good for skinning yet it's too far away from where your hand is and therefor you would lack finer control while cutting.

The handle looks good though. I'd probably thin out the belly on it a good amount. I applaud your originality but IMO it's good for the blade's features to have a function. Otherwise it's just unnecessary weight.

Cheers, and good luck! Oh and you might want to look in the knifemaker's section. There's a specific thread for works in progress.

Thank you for the advice, I think I'll take you up on it. The more I look at it, the more I see problems with it. However I did start my bevel on one side would I encounter any issues if I ground the belly down now?
Also I didnt realize there was a specific thread for this, I apologize for posting in the wrong section.

Won't make any difference at all if you grind down the belly. Hell I'd probably cut the majority of it off. I'd start at the tip and try to bring it even with the top of the choil. Might even need to lower the tip and go down the spine a little for what I'm talking about. I'm not a long time knifemaker by any means so take my advice for what it is. I've found it easier to go with more traditional design styles for starting out. It's nice to be able to have a bunch of knives in that category out in the world to look at for reference. There's a lot of little things you can do to add in your own personal touch, no need to go extremely out there to be unique. Good luck

I did a bit more work the past couple days, I really like how its turning out now, thanks for suggesting the belly reduction

I like it so far. I agree that the belly was a little too big at first. Now it looks like a sweet skinner!

The only suggestion I would have would be to work on the end of the handle a little. It just looks "off". I think the tip of that big stock needs to be either reduced, or maybe the take off some more material on the inside of the curve (so your fingers will fit better and not be scrunched together at the end of the handle). Follow the line along the bottom part of then handle. See where it starts to curve pretty gracefully, then curves out at a more severe angle? That's where I'm talking about. I would maybe just keep that graceful curve going and round off the end of the handle.

Overall it looks very good! Just trying to chime in with a few helpful suggestions. That handle looks like it might beat your hand up a little the way it is. Good luck, keep going, and post more pics. Good job!
