I want to get into knife making but didn't know if this is something I want to do. I have never done any metalwork before and didn't want to waste money in case I didn't like it. So I got some scrap metal from my local scrap yard for $0.50 per pound and ground these out. I used some scrap 2x4's for the handle material. I didn't heat treat.

Here is my first knife:

Here is the second one I made. You can see where there used to be a nail in the 2x4.

This was fun. I got some 01 steel and am going to try making and heat treating a knife.

Welcome! I'm pretty green as well, I have only made a few knives. Read the stickies at the top of shop talk, they help a lot! Nick Wheeler has some great videos on you tube that are a great reasource! To make a descent blade, you need high carbon steel as you probably know, so I'm not sure what that scrap steel will do for you. Alpha and USA knife supplies, and many others, have 1084 steel for cheap prices. And that O1 is good stuff too!! Or if you have no money like me, you use nice steel when you can and think saw blades when you can't:). Are your scales just epoxyed on? You need pins to make sure it all stays together. But for primarily crap supplies and a first go not a bad start, you'll be amazed how quickly you can get better with practice and reading in this forum like crazy! Good luck!

I like your second knife a lot.
