Well, I finally cranked one out. Sure learned a lot of ways not to make a knife along the way too.

The steel is O-1; guard, the pins and thong tube are nickel silver. Black 0.020 inch thick liners and 1/16th inch black spacer. Scales are white linen base micarta. The blade is 3 9/16 inches to the guard face and 8 1/4 inches overall. I'm hooked and want very much to thank all those on THIS forum who helped me so much with sound advise and encouragement. Thanks guys.

Knife picture is at http://riflestocks.tripod.com/pics.html

The knife is finished to 600 grit because I want to practice a bit with the buffer wheel before putting a blade to it. I've already let the belt sander get a hold of me and I'm a bit more cautious now. The feeling in part of my finger tip may never come back. Its wonderful.

Absolutely beautiful! Having seen your other work, I shouln't be surprised. .., though, as a first knife..Bravo!!

KEEP AT IT!

That pic is awesome. You can tell you are good working with your hands. We want to see more knives please!

Thanks to all for the encouragement.

Bruce, the skinner is next. I have it ground to 120 grit and ready for scales after taking it to 600 grit. If I don't mess it up on the belt sander I'll probably put the buffer to this one BEFORE putting an edge on it. I got a little anxious on the first one and tested for edge retention before completely finishing the knife. Now I'm more confident about heat treating and will finish the knives before sharpening.

Nice looking job Roger
your hooked now, feels great to look at it
and say to yourself "Hey" I made that, doesn't it.
it only gets better.
keep up the good work..

Roger that's awesome! You tried some stuff on that knife I haven't tried yet, and pulled it off neat. Great job, and it cuts like a mother too! Can't wait to see the skinner and the rest of your career. Thanks for sharing,

Dave

If my first knife had looked like that, I'd be making knifes for a living by now :D That's just beautiful - a great knife.

Schrimshaw I wish. I just turned 50 today. Not a whole lot of decades left in this ragged ol'hillbilly to learn that stuff well.

Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!
The knife looks great..And I wouldn't give this one a destruction type of testing,Just tell yourself it is a slicer only and not meant for chopping and prying..
Way to go on the first one by the way..
