This is the first knife I've ever made. It was made with files and hand tools, and took me over a year of off and on work. The knife was designed to be a guardless med. dirk and probably will still end up as one. Right now though, as you can see, it has a small half guard-do you think I should continue and made it a guardless med. dirk as I originally planned?

AOL: 17"
Blade: 12"
Steel: 1075
Handle: ebony and ironwood with N.S. and copper spacers
HT: Lee Oates, Bearpaw Forge

You should be very proud of that knife.

I'd keep the guard you have on it, but whatever you decide....Bravo!

Thanks Phil,

I am indeed proud of it. It also has a killer hamon and nice filework, neither of which shows well in the photo. I guess the knife-making bug bit me, ;) as I've ordered a belt grinder and went out a bought a nice drillpress. Again, thanks for your kind words.

Absolutely stunning, and even more so knowing that it's a first-time effort. Leave it alone. You went with a gut instinct and it looks perfecto! :D

Thank you guys,

Now! I just need to learn how to engrave! :) I'm looking forward to seeing what I can do once i get the belt grinder.

Anyway, Gig and Coop, appreciate the nice words. I thought I was too old to need praise, but I admit it feels pretty good. (Sure don't get praise for my knife making from my wife, and my friends, well, they just don't get it).

Great job! It is an exceptional knife for you first one.Leave it as is and take some bigger pics. :D

Very nice. It would look great without a guard, but it looks just fine the way it is. I would like to see close up photos of the handle and the area aroung the Spanish notch.

Ok, Keith

I'll work on getting those pictures and will post them soon.

Thanks to all you guys,

Dave

That's a beautiful knife Dave, first or whatever. I think it would look great guard or guardless but it's your vision so you should make the call.
Very impressive knowing you made this with just hand tools  I can't wait to see your work when you have better equipment!

Knife...? Or a sword? That sucker's huge! Looks like it was made for skinning orcs. Whatever it is though, nice job on it.

Fantastic work!!! I can't believe that is your first knife!

More pics please. :D

Damn fine! Love to see some more pics!

First effort bowled me over. Give us a little warning on your next work of art...

I want to thank all you guys for the kind words. It is you who have overwhelmed me, I didn't expect much of a reaction. I am working on getting better pictures, and plan to post more soon. For you guys who think this is a big knife, well, I don't consider a 12" blade to be all that big. It Does look long, but it's due in large part to the slim profile. This started out to be a bell bowie, then a med. dirk, and I guess it ended up being slightly both with a little persian in the design. It was fun to do, and i am looking forward to doing another.
