Hello,
I thought I would show you all my first real knife. I may have had some others before this, I'm not sure. My father gave this to me new for my birthday around 1985 (I was around 11). I carried it for years then put it away. I'm amazed I never lost it. It means more to me now than ever.
A couple years ago my friend who was into knives cleaned it up and sharpened it for me. That was the start of my new interest in knives. I now have a shoe box full.
I purchased a new Schrade last year that was the same pattern and gave it to my son. Its not near as nice, however I do not think it is as bad as some on the forums think. Of course I have not tried carrying it for a couple years either.
What modern knife is the same style? I like the looks of the Case trapper lock, I have never handled one though.
Thanks,
Keith

Nice knife. Love the OTs.

There's a pretty good selection of quality production models for a slim single clip blade trapper, though the ones I'm thinking of don't lock like your Schrade.

> Great Eastern Cutlery #48
> Case Barehead Slimline Trapper
> Queen Utility Knife #11
> Canal Street Half Moon Pie Trapper

Love them Old Timers, They don't make em like that any more. IMO Old Timer was the best knife company ever.

If you really like the pattern, don't go modern.

I've posted these before, but you can still find the originals for a lot less than you pay for a new GEC. The bone handles are tougher to find, the Scrimshaws are still pretty common, in both carbon and stainless steel. And there are other variations of this linerlock pattern.

Slate,

Thats a nice first knife. Everyone who's a traditional fan should have at least one OT IMO. A couple of questions for you... How thin is the blade? Does it have a little flex to it?

Thanks,
Paul

Yep. A very nice knife. My favorite of all of Schrade's production knives. You can still get them on a certain auction site, just be patient and pick the one you want.

That's my favorite Old Timer pattern as well. I have two like yours (one REAL clean, one about in the shape of yours (still nice) that I carry a lot. And I just got three of the scrimshaws. There's something about that knife....

Your dad did you a solid. Awesome you still have the knife.

That's just one of the most beautiful patterns around. Nice that you still have it.

Thanks for all the great comments. Its sad there is no modern equivalent. It is nice to see that you can still find ones in pretty good shape out there.

In response to Pauls question, the blade is pretty thin. I can flex it a little. I'm not sure how thin, or where you would measure it.

I wonder how much this may have cost my Dad in 1985? I would bet he found it on sale somewhere.;)
