I just picked up my first long range rifle.
Remington SPS .308 Varmint 26"
Falcon Menace 5-25x50mm ML16 reticle, mil/mil turrets
EGW 20moa base
Seekins Medium rings. I probably could run lows but he only had mediums in stock.
Harris 9-13" notched bipod. I borrowed it from another rifle. ill get a 6-9" leg notch swivel bipod soon.
eagle cheek pouch
future upgrades include timney 2lb trigger, McMillan A5 stock, CDI bottom metal, badger bolt knob, AAC cyclone suppressor (when I turn 21). Im debating a kreiger tube but at this point it may not be worth it. truing the action will come eventually too.

Congratulations! You ought to really enjoy the rifle and you can shoot a lot of 308s without concerns about barrel life. I hope you make another post when you get it tuned up and see what kind of groups it will print for you. Have fun.

Great set up. I am in the process of making a Tikka T3 tactical in .308 into a long range gun. I really enjoy the .308 round but having shot the .260 rem I might get a rifle chambered in that.

Do you handload?

You can adjust the 700 trigger and COULD wind up with something you like..but not in the 2# range, IMHO.

If barrel is free floated you may be pleasantly surprised by box stock accuracy. Black Hills 168gr BTHP shoots best in both my .308's..it will be worthwhile to try various brands and bullet weights until you can reload.

I'm old and not a reloader however enjoy punching paper, varmints and predators..and 20 years ago.. OH, MI and MO whitetails.

Enjoy your new rifle.

the 308 was for yrs. the most inherently accurate 30 cal. used to do a lot of handloading until 90s,do'nt shoot nearly as much anymore but since computers got in ammo, factory stuff is real decent.not trying to be a benchrest grouper anymore. my 270 rem.721 with win. 130 gr p.p. & burris put 3 in .66 in. at 100 last week. at 70 of age ca'nt ask more than that. shoot as much as you can, great hobby.besides if s.h. fan you have one that will reach out & touch them.

everyone says the Xmark trigger is good for about 200 rnds until it gets finiky. I hope a $125 timney will be a good investment.

saving for a $550 Mcmillan plus the $300 for the CDI all at once sucks though:(

i have some winchester 150's, remington core lokt 180's and hornady 168 Amax BTHP's. i gotta find some FGMM and black hills stuff.

Very nice choice. I just bought one of those about 5-6 months ago. mounted a Nikon 4.5-20x44. First thing I plan to do is drop in a Jewell Trigger.:)

Shoot the stock barrel and save your money on the Krieger until YOU are good enough to tell the difference. Remingtons come with very good factory barrels so, for most people the money spent on a new barrel is money wasted because the shooter isn't good enough to ring the extra accuracy out of it.

McMillian stocks are very nice. I put an HTG on my 338-06 and had it cut to fit me. Fitting the rifle to the shooter works much better then fitting the shooter to the rifle.

AAC suppressors are very good. I would STRONGLY suggest you get a quick detach model like the 762-SD or SCAR-H SD so it can be shared among several rifles. There is a lot of anti-AAC hate on the error'net so, don't let that sway you into making an inferior choice. Contact me off-line if you want details.

Finally, instead of spending a lot of money tweaking a box stock rifle, consider buying one that is gently used. I got an FN A3G with ~$500 of accessories with a 42 shot log book and a 5 shot 3/8ths target for under $2K. When you true and add a Krieger barrel, you are half way to a purchase like that. Factor in the glass bedded McMillan stock and your Remington resale value and you have the purchase price for a rifle like mine. Barrel life on these rifle is practically indefinite for most shooters but, if that happens (10K-20K rounds) FN will rebarrel it for you.
