First I apologize for the crappy pics,I was in a hurry because the sun was already behind the ridge & setting fast.(This was last WE BTW)
First I gathered some moss hanging off a limb. Then I tried to make a fatwood fuzz stick, but I'm too heavy handed & kept slicing the curles off.I just need more practice.:o
The curles & moss finally caught after quite a few tries with the fero rod & Swamp Warden.

I got the fatwood from the tore up stump behind the fire pit, center of pic.
Pretty convenient, just walk over & hack off a chunk as needed.

Ahhh, another great weekend in the mountains.:D

Ok now I am jealous, I live in the freaking prairies and don't have the chance to head to the mountains:grumpy::D

I have never tried to make a fuzz stick with fat wood, I only ever made shavings and a few splinters and would spark that up. Got pretty good at it too and can light on first spark 90% of the time. I made my first friction fire today, I will say if you are going to give it a try to eat a hearty breakfast before hand.

Keep practicing with the fero rod and it will become second nature and you wont use matches or a lighter to light a fire again:thumbup:

Matches,we don't need no stinking matches.

Thanks all,I'll get to friction fire making someday.

Baby steps Bob,baby steps.

Great stuff buddy, well done !

Next time try scraping a pile of dust off the fatwood and spark that up, you might find it goes up easier than the curls.

Nice job, Mykel! If it is dry enough, that Old Man's Beard will light directly from a firesteel spark. If not, look around for dandilions that have gone to seed. I recently helped a young man do his first matchless fire and he insisted he din not want to use brought tinder. He about wore himself out trying the OMB alone, but by adding the fluff from about a dozen dandilions, it lit right up.
