For a total sharpening noob, who just started collecting knives barely a year ago I just managed to put my first mirror edge using my edge pro apex. By no means is it perfect, but it is miles ahead of what I have ever done before. The very tip needs some work as does the very base. Not bad for a first try if I say so myself.

EDIT: Just to clarify that this was a reprofiling. I lowered the edge angle to around 17 degrees

Very nice job indeed.

One thing to watch out for is the tip. It is the hardest place to not damage when using the Edge Pro

In fact, I've rounded off a lot of tips ;)

Make sure to work the way through the grits, and give enough time for each to ensure you did it the right way

Always keep your stones flat. That means getting the Silicon Carbide powder at Edge pro's website and grind it between the stone and a panel of glass(hardware store)

Good luck friend!

P.S. You also want to tape up the blade so you completely avoid having the slight slurry sand your blade's finish!

Aren't mirror edges purdy!

How did we get by without them back in the day?

Oh yeah, we used the hardest oilstone we could find...

The biggest mistake people seem to make at 1st is using too much pressure.

It doesn't take a lot of pressure for the stones to work.

Use plenty of water when sharpening, the stones work better and they will last a lot longer. Don't be afraid of the water, it wipes up easy, if the stones are filling up you aren't using enough.

Put a small amount of dish soap in the water bottle, it helps a lot keeping the stones clean and you can also put some on the rod to keep it lubed.

Dang, this waiting is the hardest part for me. Priority mail takes two weeks for my item to get here. :)

BTW, Jim is that stone flattening kit necessary? I thought I saw a post by you saying it's not, but I'm not too sure I remember correctly.
