I gotta admit, for the simplistic inexpensive knife that it is, it's very well done in the quality department :-)

Great choice! The slim Effile series Opinels are very nicely done!

They are beautiful, for sure. After handling one, however, I don't see it working ...for my needs. To filet a fish, YES!
LOL, I prefer the standard width blade profile.

They grow on your really quickly. For the simple fact that they cut things really well!

Walnut is a good choice. Welcome to the addiction. I'll openly admit to being a knife snob, but I love my opinels.

I love the walnut handle, just wish they had the carbon steel in it. Still have to wait till tomorrow for mine. Enjoy your new knife, I know I have a pile of boxes that may need to be broken down tomorrow, conveniently timed huh.

And Machine26 wasn't part of being a knife snob was owning an Opinel? Or have I just been the traditional side of the forum too long, seems like everyone owns one, just like owning a SAK.

Walnut would have been a cool handle... this one I got today has the Bubinga wood. The only other knife I have with Bubinga, is my German made Otter Messer anchor knife. This Opinel's Bubinga has some nice character, more so than the Otter Messer. I was thinking maybe the Ebony version... but this one will do for an Opinel representation :-)

Oh they have Bubinga I didn't know that. So much for the Opinel being a budget knife, I am already thinking about 2 more now and it's not even here.

They make reg models with Grade "A" ebony handles....and olive etc
Google the Opinel No8 Vinland Damascus Blade with Ebony handle.....(not cheap)

It was time to wipe her down a little and place her in my latest knife display. The Mercator k55k, the Douk Douk, and this latest Opinel knife, are all in the same price range, (but the Opinel is the least expensive of the three).... and yet it holds it's own and thensome in presentation. I'm glad I finally gave Opinel a try :-)

Btw... I paid $22 for the Opinel, but that included the s&h :-)

The higher end, Opinels with the nicer handles, are very attractive knives IMO. Bubinga is a nice upgrade from the effective, but lackluster Beech. It goes nicely in your collection. I hope you treat yourself to a nice Alox SAK. I like, and carry the plastic handle ones, but for your display Alox would be more nostalgic IMHO. The Farmer is really cool, and the saw is surprisingly decent. The Solider though is a classic.

Thank you, sir :-) And actually, the soldier may be my choice in the alox sak :-)

Jimmy, if you can find the Wenger made version the SI...it was made in the french speaking region of the Alps so you would have a tie in to your other French knives... The Wenger version is exactly the same except they kept the older hollow rivet design and put a nice bail through it...one of the best user/field versions of the Soldier IMO. They are harder to find these days...discontinued a couple of years ago.

Here's a quick snap showing the differences: (Wengers on top....)

Victorinox used to have the hollow rivet but changed over to the solid rivet in 92-93.
