Howdy folks,
Since I'm still a fairly new maker, I keep running into "firsts". :)
I recently posted my first damascus dagger (in the Gallery) and here's my first damascus bowie. The blade is 10" long. It has sides of 1084 and 15n20, with a core of W2. Handle is desert ironwood.
This also my first san mai blade.

It's hard to keep that core centered!

Thanks for looking!

Looks great. The san mai is a little differrent than I normally see. On the one side, with the pattern welded outer layer set back from the edge, it looks like others that I have seen. The other side has the outer layer going all the way to the edge in some areas, and that is what I am not used to.

Phillip,
You are right, its hard to keep centered, but your doing some great work. One good thing about this one being a little off centered is you used all high carbon. I'm sure you heat treated for the W-2, but still the other steels should be close.

The lines are really good on this knife. It should be a good seller for you.

Wow you went for san mai on your first damascus blade - that's ambitious! I agree with Lin - nice lines on this piece and a very attractive bowie. I'd like to see consistent separation of the damascus outer layer from the carbon core, which I'm sure you will nail on the next one. I'm just happy to see a san mai bowie - definitely something of a rarity nowadays.

That pattern is nice. How many layers does it have? With that combination of steels, suffice to say that it will probably cut quite well in addition to bein' purty:thumbup::D

That is superb!!!!!!!!!!

I've seen makers that couldn't do that with their 500th knife.....

Very nice, Phillip. Your damascus work is looking great. I really enjoy my damascus utility knife I picked up from you on the maker's forum earlier this year. Keep up the good work!

Thanks everyone for the kind words. :)

Roger, this is not my first damascus knife, just my first bowie.

Roger and Keith, I tried to keep the sides even and the core centered. Hopefully I'll do better on the next one. :)

Lin, thanks for the encouragement. :)

That's great Phillip... Love the whole knife f/the steels to the handle material and flow. Very nice!!!!!!!!!!!
