Hi, I'm just a bladeforum cruiser who loves to see what the steel and leather artists of this sight have created lately...great entertainment for me. (Plus I have bought a couple of knives...hard not to!)
I purchased a knife a few months ago that had no sheath, and thought that I'd give it a try to make one. Pandora's box was opened. My first creation was a simple but pitiful little pouch sheath that is still spared from the trash can only by having the distinction of being my first shot at making something out of leather. Now, a few months later, I was asked by a friend to make a sheath for a knife he plans to give as a gift this Christmas; I took it as a huge compliment and challenge to make something worthwhile. It's a really nice knife, requires a complimenting sheath to say the least. The huge bulk of the elk stag handle, as well as a thick brass bolster, made for some challenging design work (for me anyway) to try and make it functional and proportioned at the same time. (ie:Never had stacked a welt that thick before.)
I thought it turned out pretty well, even though it's eat up with flaws...but it's my first attempt at something other than a pouch sheath, so I'm pleased with the results. Thought I'd post it here and open myself up for (hopefully) some constructive pointers/tips from the accomplished leather dudes (and dudettes) of this forum. Thanks in advance.

Well done! The stamping and stitching are straight and even, that is the most difficult part. The edges look mighty fine as well. THe new owner will undoubtedly treasure that pairing.

Thank you very much! I appreciate the complimentary feedback!
Over the past couple months, I have scoured this forum looking at everything y'all make and trying to pick up a pointer or twenty...there are some gifted craftsmen here that newbies like me benefit from greatly...thanks!

Well, olfeller (from one old feller to another), I'd say given your level of experience, that one sure does shine. As my friend Dwayne noted the stitching, stamping and THE EDGES are really good. Most newbies won't give those edges the time they need to come out nice like that.

Be sure to show us some more as you progress.

Paul

Thanks guys.
I used Fiebing's Aussie Leather Conditioner to finish, condition, and seal the sheath (inside and out)...first time I've used it and it seems to be good stuff. I don't know how long it will hold up before needing a re-coat though. (Like I said, first time I've used it).
Anybody have any experience with the Aussie product? Any suggested other finish/sealer products?
I've used the Acrylic Resolene but don't like the glaze/haze it leaves.
Thanks again.
