My First Queen Knife

Just received my first Queen knife, purchased from Sooner State Knives. It's a Q-40JBC JIGGED BLACK CHERRY HANDLE 2 BLADE GUNSTOCK, 3 5/8" CLOSED. D-2 STEEL CLIP AND PEN BLADES.

Cosmetically, the knife looks great. Unfortunately, the master blade has more back & forth wooble than a certain Senator that ran for Prez not to long ago. Not sure if I should whack the bolsters to try and tighten it up a little bit or just send the damn thing back to Queen. Q.C. at Queen was really out to lunch the day this knife got through.

Maybe I'll just dump it on eBay with full disclosure.

Why is it that slipjoints from China can exhibit great quality and yet a premium brand knife made in the USA can't get it right?????

Oh well, it is what it is.

Send it back! No excuse for poor quality on knives in that price range. I've read quite a few reviews lately that lead me to believe Queen QC is hit-or-miss. Some dealers will personally inspect the knife before shipping, if you request.

I agree. Send it back.

I have heard a number of stories like this, but have never gotten a bad Queen knife. I think that it's becasue I usually buy them at Cumberland, and I think that Bill Horn inspects every knife that he ships out.

I've never had to send in a bad one, but I did have to send in one that I broke the blade on, Queen will take great care of you. Some of the best customer service out there.

Send it back. I recently bought a Queen King Cattle and found it to be top notch. Compared to a similar Case (large stockman in CV), the Queen has much better walk and talk. I'm amazed at how solidly it snaps into open and closed positions. The Case has a much "softer" snap to it.

Can't win them all, but I agree that the dealer makes a difference. I bought a Moore Maker from Frank Ruff down in Umatilla, FL recently. It came with some odd pitting on one of the scales. Frank was quick to encourage me to send it back and even offered to cover my shipping. Not all dealers are cut of the same cloth. Sounds like Bill Horn is one of the good ones as well.

One thing that I've started paying more attention to is the outfit's return policy. Some places charge restocking fees as high as 20%. That's a little ridiculous on an item as small as a pocketknife. If they were restocking heat pumps, I might could understand.

Everyone lets a dog out every now and then, seems that lately there have been more coming from Queen than we've heard in the past. Or maybe just more forumites are buying slips, hence a broader base of experience.

I would send it back to the vendor personally. I don't believe in warranty repair on a knife you just bought.

About the Chinese, they have really upped the ante in the last year or two. I think if they ever move to a little better steel and less outlandish styles/bone colors they could really hurt the big US makers. They will be forced to step up or step out. Steel Warrior is already having an impact.

Competition is a good thing and the consumer wins. I would definitely hope they step up.

Send it back, for sure. Then buy from Cumberland. Bill at Cumberland will hand pick you one out of his stock. I believe it is true that he checks his whole stock as it comes in and rejects ones not up to par. Then he will handpick for you on top of that. Great guy and great service.

That sounds pretty good. Think I'm going to send some business Bill's way.

not to turn this thread into a Cumberland commercial, but I think that you will find that Bill's prices are very reasonable.

I'm done whinning about the poor quality of my Queen Knife. Unfortunately, I'm pretty much stuck with it 'till I move to Aridzony in mid December.

After I'm settled, I will definitely send it to "someone" for resolution.

The way I discovered Cumberland Knife works and Bill Horn was, I received a Queen Mtn Man Lockback that I was not satisfied with from ANOTHER vendor who then would not respond to my e-mails. I posted on another board seeking advice, and Bill responded telling me to send it to him and he would replace it. He even told me not to worry about the cost of shipping, although I included it anyway. Talk about going above and beyond...

That story doesn't surprise me. Bill Horn is really a cut above.
