hey bob,

i have recently just became a member of the randall knife society, just got my card the other day, there is a guy on here samael, he has a very cool avitar, he will probably see your post and respond to it, he has a very good knowledge of randalls, much better than myself.

another guy lunde is on here at times and can help to, between lunde and samael, you will get an accurate answer.

my knowledge is limited, however i do know that they are excellent knives and you will love it. great catch, you will love them as good as you do the busse knives.

take care and holla anytime

There are some really knowledgeable guys here. A few days ago I came here looking for info on my Randall Made 3-6 and they were really helpful and generous with their time. No doubt you will find your answer.

Back of your sheath says it's a model 16...looks exactly like this to me:

Cool thats it . Maybe 30 years ago . This one has seen some use .
That's the way I like them .:D

Thanks for the link

Cool avatar, eh? Thanks.

Yep, it's a model 16 Diver's Knife, and it's in stainless steel (as all of the Diver's Knives are). Sounds like you've had most of your questions answered already, but if you have any more, feel free to ask.

Hey Samael ,

How do you determine the age of a Randall ?
Are there any markings to look for ?
Also how much should I clean it up ?
Do I leave it alone ?

Thanks in advance

How do you determine the age of a Randall? The best way to determine age on most Randalls is to look at the spacers. They varied considerably over the years, and while this isn't foolproof, it can be a good starting point. Um, except for knives like the 16, which doesn't have spacers. I know there are other ways of dating 16s; I just don't know enough about this model to tell you what they are.

Are there any markings to look for? Not really. The "S" tells you it's stainless, but all 16s are. If it had the name of somebody famous on it, that would increase the value, but I think you would have noticed that by now.

Also how much should I clean it up? Do I leave it alone? Ah, here's where it gets interesting. A collector would probably tell you to clean it up as little as possible. Some even go so far as to not polish the brass. Personally, I think this is pretty "over the top" for all but the most collectible knives. From what I can see, you don't have anything more "special" here than any other nice, old Randall. Which is plenty special enough.

I'd probably clean it up as best I could without using a metal polish (e.g., soap and water) and see if I could live with it like that. If you're just going to keep the knife in a safe or a drawer somewhere, that will probably be good enough.

If you plan on using the knife, go ahead and polish it up with some Simichrome (recommended), Flitz, or something similar.

Hope that helps.

hey bob,

i told that samael knew what the dealio was, he knows what he is doing and is level headed and common sense about what he says, never actually met him, but he sounds like good people and i would value his input.

lunde is another good one on here, i actually need to email him soon.

take care and enjoy it.

you now have two expensive knives to collect/use
