After all the great things I've heard about Randall knives I think it's time I got one. Any suggestions? Comments?
The knife would be used fora ll around utility purposes. Possibly self defense.

Any randall is a good one. My friend ("renfield" on the forums) has a model #1 (i think), but anyway it is awesome. This weekend i went to a new knife shop and got to hold a bunch of different ones and they where all beyond awesome. I think my favorite is the model #10, but thats just my opinion.

so many randalls...so little time

Maxpower, I've owned about 20 Randall's over the last ten years. They are great knives and you can customize the heck out of them when you buy one, lot's of options! Many forumites will tell you to buy something else. This is because they are not "state of the art" but classic in design and materials. A Randall is a little like driving the great looking '57 Chevy rather than that 2000 'Vette.

There are so many options available I hesitate to suggest one for you but if I knew a little more about what you wanted to do with it, approximate blade length, etc. I could help a bit, as could a bunch of other forumites.

For combat/utility, I would recommend the Model 1. It offers such a wide veriety of configurations, that you will spend hours of deciding which bells and whistles you want to put on it.
For a utility knife I think the Model 25 Trapper is really nice, although it doesn't have many options, I think it is currently their top selling knife. Look on thrie web site, or get their catalog and have fun.

I'm not sure what you are looking for but the model 14 is a classic camp and field knife.

Well of all the Randalls I have owned I would have to say that the Model 1 and Model 25 are my favorites. I have had a few Model 14's and the finger grooves just does not fit my rather large hand. The single finger groove fits worse then the 4 finger groove. If you have a small hand they might be exactly what you are looking for.

The Model 1 fit my hand about as well as any Randall I have owned and is just an all around great knife. In my opinion everybody needs a Model 1 Randall. I think it should be a law!

ater looking at them all and playing with quite afew i bought a 5" #5 its a great allround knife.
a #1 would be my next chose.

Well, I love my old 6" Hunter's Bowie. I would suggest another hilt than the leather washer that is standard, however.

I bought a model 14 when I got to Ft. Bragg in '88 and I still have it. Best investment I ever made. I also like the model 1, the 15 and the combat companion. I suggest getting the catalog or going to Nordic knives web site. I bet if you buy one you'll get another.

I'm also ordering my first Randall. I decided to go for #5-5 with stag handles. It was hard choise between #3-5 + stag, Denmark special and Trout and bird. I decided to go for #5 as everyone needs at least one #5.

My problem is that I'm moving this spring and my phone number changes. Randall uses phonenumber as customers number. Is it allright to order now or do I have to wait until I have my new phonenumber? I want to order it yesterday...

Just a suggestion for you guys who are wanting to order Randall Knives. Unless you just want to wait approx. 2 years I would suggest that you check out www.nordicknives.com . They usually have several Randall's in stock and in the event that they do not have what you are looking for you can custom order through them and they can have your knife in just a few months. It sure beats the hell out of Randall's wait!

I agree that any Randall would be a good choice. However, I thnk that ppossibly the best self defense/utility knife on the planet is the Model 14. I took one to Vietnam in 1967. I never (thank God) had to use it for self defense but I used it for everything else. It opened c-rat cans, 55 gal drums, ammo crates and a claymore or two. It cut everything from paracord to detcord. It never let me down. Unfortunately, it didn't make it back (thats another story) but I repalced it as soon as I could. I still have the replacement and I still use it.

There are about 26 Randall dealers in the country who can probably get you a knife faster than the Randall shop itself. Here are a few I have used besides Nordic Knives above:

Doug Kenefeck (860) 774-8929
Greg Gutcher (813) 236-8791
Jack Crider (614) 276-6060

All dealers have constant orders in at Randall but don't have to give the details until 90 days out so if they have an opening on their order for three months out, they can usually get you one in that time. The last time I looked, the order to ship time at Randall was 18 months and not likely to get shorter anytime soon.

BTW, If anyone is looking for a model #14, #1, or the last two club knives, e-mail me.

I have had a Model 1 for over a dozen years now. I had the handle changed over to micarta standard and single grip versions. I did not care for them so now it's back at Randall for a micarta border patrol handle.

Bill - why did you have to open a claimore?
Did you actually cut it open with a knife?!!
Just can't help wondering about the reason...

Alex.

I have a model 16 the dive knife. It's kind of like a light version of the 14 I called Randall to have them add serrations to the blade to make it more useful to me as a rope, net cutter but I was told that they didnt offer this as an option. Does they're unwillingness to do this have any thing to do with the blades shape. Or do they just not understand what divers use knives for

MaxPower I think by now you get the idea. I cannot recommend a particular model without knowing exactly how you're going to use it. However keep one thing in mind, all Randall's knives except three models have tapered/reduced tang.

For this reason it may not be as strong as some other knives out there that are full tang and designed for chin-up. The three models that have full tang construction are #14, #15 and #16, which according to Randall's catalogue, are "almost indestructible".

I've a standard #16 and I use it in all my camping trips for chopping/splitting fire wood and all other camp chore, and this is the only knife that I'll use, period.

I have a model 1-7" and i love it. Its a great, solid, well made knife. However, no Randall ive ever held came with a sharp blade. I mean like, nowhere even close to being hair shaving sharp. But thats just like a minor detail. I dont think that you can go wrong with any Randall. Id also go for a o1 blade opposed to 440b. Anyway, im sure youll love it.
Andrew

My first Randall was a stock model 15 ordered directly from Orlando. No wait either. I called 'em up and they had one for sale. Gotta love it.

Hey renfield, i thought they where 440v not 440b Or are they. oh whell the # 5 is awesome any way you see it.well then again so are all of randalls knives
