Received my orange/od RC-3 in the mail yesterday. More on that in a bit.
I have to admit, I was at first a RAT skeptic. Granted it was misinformed, since it was based on quick views of RAT products on this website and coming to the incorrect conclusion that RAT was a Busse related product (the name "rat", coated blades, etc. - that there were a decent amount of photos of RC-3s with AR-15s helped support my thoughts). Not that Busses are bad, it's just not my thing.
Then when I was looking around for an orange handled knife for hiking, I had almost decided on a Spyderco UKPK, but I'm not a big fan of supersteels. Flipping through a post showing photos of orange knives I saw a photo of an RC-3 and I figured, eh, I'll head over to the RAT subforum for the heck of it.
That's when my eyes were opened thanks to three things:
Posts by Jeff and Mike (and Shon) reflecting their philosophy and ideals. I like how they didn't try to sell their knives as the be-all, end-all.
Posts by the members on this subforum - a great, unassuming, kind bunch. Plus, all the posts showing what these knives are designed to do and are capable of doing.
And finally, I found out that they were made of sweet 1095. No proprietary supersteel.
SOLD!
I want to appologize for the crappy uninformed opinion that I started out with (but luckily never expressed).
Now on to the knife.
Haven't had the chance to play with it yet. But it feels VERY solid. Excellent balance for fine or brute force work. I was afraid that I'd be disappointed with the choil, but it's perfect, feels useful, and it doesn't seem like I "lose" any blade from it. That blade came nice and sharp and the 1/8" thickness seems just right for a bunch of tasks. And the sheath! On most fixed blades, the sheath is an accessory, an afterthought. On this thing, it's an integral part of the system. There's so many ways to mount this thing, I have to admit, I'm a bit baffled with what I'm going to do with it right now.
Sorry for the long-winded post, but this knife deserves it.
