A friend bought me a big piece of leather to make sheaths with, as a gift. Nice, although I don't know how! So9 I said I would practice by making him a puoch holster for his .22 pistol. Thought that would be easy - HA! 90% of a project is overcoming your own mistakes. Like, cut out a pattern first THEN add buttons THEN sew it together! Ah the things I learned. Just getting that star on the button was a 2-day project.

I'm extra satisfied with the belt-loop solution. He wanted to be able to change the cant. That's very tough without a lot of hardware. What I ended up doing was using double-sided velcro strips, gutting off most of the hooks on the hook side except for 1" on one end. So now the velcro loops are fully adjustable to accommodate different-sized belts, and each can be set at several different height settings so that cant can be adjusted.

He said he didn't expect pretty, just functional. I need to even out the darkness (oil) on the flap, but overall I think he'll be pretty psyched. But all suggestions on improvements are happily encouraged!

Nice handy work, very impressive. What kind of leather and tools did you use? I have been thinking for awhile about a simple holster for my Ruger Mk III.....hmm.

thanks, I just used

leather
knife
speedy-stitching awl
leather cement
waxed string (comes w/awl)
buttons
mineral oil
and a little trident sort of thing they sell at leather shops to make the holes for the stitching.
