My first real knife from file

Hey guys,

I made this knife from an old file which I annealed first and then using just an angle grinder for the design (free-handed). later I hardened it and then polished it to a mirror finish. Not really a user's knife but it is sharp though! I also made a sheath from wood and wrapped tight in leather.

I'd like to hear what you think, I'm quite happy with it.

Thanks for the positive reactions so far, i'll try to make some better pictures of it to make the grinds more visible. I had some problems with that because of the high polish, does anyone have any tips on that?

I like it except for the high polish, I think for this style of knife with that handle material a satin finish would have been a better fit. As already mentioned it would have been nice to see the grind lines. Good Job though.

Thanks, I'd like to explain a bit more about the grinds I put in. It is not a classic kind of grind, but more of a "Lay-on" design (see picture) which thins out and flows into the knife towards the tip. In theory it should act like kind of a "reversed blood gutter" but I just liked the look of it. (what do you think of it?)

(Thickness of the lay-on grind is a little exaggurated)

Then about the polish, for me it was the only way to go, didn't like the satin finish at all with this knife. I also liked the contrast with the matt handle and shiny blade. oh well, tastes differ but I appreciate the constructive criticism.
It is only my first knife and I had fun making it! second is already on the way!
all tips are welcome!

The grind is kinda like the Kizlyar Phoenix series military knives. Good grind which has good flex resistance. Wonder how it cuts, won't the reverse blood-groove give resistance when cutting?

Very nice work, what do you think of a larger and slightly thicker guard? Maybe a blade handle ratio where the blade is longer?

All in all, really like the grind and polish.

Yeah it does look like the Kizlyar Phoenix! (I had never seen it before) and yes the reversed blood-groove does give a little resistance when cutting but thats almost negligible. This design like the Kizlyar is not really meant for cutting, more like stabbing but it does both jobs well.

The guard was exactly a point which I thought could improve, but I didnt have suitable material lying around at the time. The guard is in fact made of an old circular saw which is a very very tough carbon steel.

Then about the handle: well I have big hands, and the file wasn't any longer haha ;) just kidding. This was also what I thought, a bigger blade to a shorter handle would be even better, The wooden part of the handle fits my hand well and could have been enough but I like the balance of the blade like it is now too.

Still all reactions are welcome!

Well keep experimenting on this reverse bloodgroove. That and the super polished blade can be your distinctive style. Keep posting your works, nice to see some new designs :)
