My first "real" knife...

Hi all.

Just stopped by a local cutlery shop and couldn't leave without the Kershaw Ken Onion Rainbow Leek they had on display. I had gone in looking more for a fixed blade like the Cold Steel Recon Scout, but they only had the CS Hunter. So my decision was between a SOG Seal Pup and the Kershaw. That rainbow finish just knocks me out, so here I am. I got it for $49.95. So this is my first knife above $20 and instead of being bummed that I spent 50 bucks, I am stoked to finally have a decent quality knife. Anyways... this seems like no big deal to many of you who have knives that cost hundreds of $$$, but I am really stoked about this knife. I'm gonna have to have the Rainbow Chive to match now! (May have to stop by that shop on the way home tonight and get the one of those they have.) I'm hooked!

Damn, the prices have come down, when I was buying the Kershaw Rainbow was $150CDN.

I definitely know the feeling of satisfaction you get with that first "real" knife... For about a year I was buying POS Frost Cutlery "tactical" knives from Smokey Mountain Knife Works...

Yeah.

My first "real" knife was a Spyderco Native III, and just holding it was so great... Quality product is a wonderful thing.

My first real knife was a Chris Reeve Shadow, and I'm convinced that owning quality leads to owning more quality. Enjoy the ride!

Yeah, my first real knife was a Kershaw Blackout ST, very nice. All the previous ones I had were pretty cheap, I was thinking of getting an Opinel for a while, I would have if my brother hadn't given me his cheap one. I'd count Opinels as real knives despite the price - they've got a very simple but very functional design.

I've always bought fairly good quality knives, even my first. But that was because I spent a lot of time here. :p

I am one of those that has knives that cost many hundreds of dollars, but it is great toread a post like yours that has such enthusiasm. I remember when I felt the same way you do now. If you are anything like me you will find yourself investing in better and better knives. Even if you don't it is nice to see that you are happy with your higher end knife.

I guess the first "real" knife I bought was the CRKT m-18, but I think in actuality my first real knife will be the one I make as soon as I find a decent grinder.

I can't remember that "first real knife" day, or even what it was but I do remember the POS knife days before it. I was a child of the eighties and I remember buying way too much Frost, United, Valor, Parker, Taylor, Explorer, etc. At that time it was okay as long as it didn't say Pakistan. :)

So congrats on your new knife. Beware, though, it's addictive!

ps - God I wish I'd at least kept the Buck 185 and the Gerber Mark II. My taste changed away from super killer ninja knives but I could sell them today for decent money.

I remember getting my first real quality knife, a CRKT Neck PECK. Damn, I loved that tiny bugger! :) It was my EDC for quite a few months.

Now it's used for little more than opening envelopes and cutting loose threads from time to time, I just bought so many nicer knives in the meantime - and I'll continue to do so.

:) For what it's worth, I have knives costing hundreds of dollars, but bought an American made Leek in a blister pack about 2 months ago. I carry the Leek probably 3-4 days a week. Enjoy your new Leek, it's a fine knife.

Thanks for all the kind replies guys!

I went-out the very next day and bought the Rainbow Leek's little brother -- the Rainbow Chive. What a sweet pair of knives! I am now watching some auctions on Ebay with the limited editions (1 of 500) of both the Leek and Chive with Rainbow blade and black boron handle. Those will most likely be the next two that I add to the folding knife collection. I also want a regular stainless Chive to carry at work (I can't carry knives with blades longer than 2"), because the Rainbows look too nice to have banging around in my pocket with change and other stuff.

The whole reason that I got into knives was my desire for tactical gear, and on that note, I won an auction yesterday for a Cold Steel SRK for $45. Pretty good deal there. I also plan to get one of the S&W HRT boot knives sometime today online to complete my tactical rig for now. I'd like some more expensive stuff (like the Chris Reeve Green Beret, TOPS Ranger's Edge, or Gerber Silver Trident), but those will have to wait. Anyways... though I initially started this new hobby with tactical knives in mind, I am now way more into folders and I plan to collect a lot of the Kershaw stuff first. I have also seen the Buck Koji folders and will have to have one of those eventually.
