My first refurb!

Hey all! I found this in a customers attic almost a year ago. She said it was likely her husbands or the previous owners. She also said she had no use for it and I could have it! So I took it home and stripped off the nasty red paint, filed all the edges round and smooth. Then I wet sanded the whole thing from 220 up to about 600 just to satinize and smooth it up. Totally re-profiled the HORRIBBLE edge and gave it a quick semi polished edge.

THe handle was sanded to about 1000 grit. I 2 color stained it and then applied a million coats of danish oil and rubbed it till it felt silky!
I also forced a hearty patina, then oiled well to keep rust at bay.

What do you guys think?

Nice job!
I love the patina.

Did you remove the head from the handle, or did you leave it on and just work around it?

Yeah, she looked at it and said, "what the hell am I gunna do with it? You take it!" So happily I did haha

Did not remove the head, just worked it whole. cant wait to chop something! The patina was done in about 3-4 steps so there are multiple layers of patters/colors on there.

Thanks guys

It looks good.

I'd have probably left that one alone except for the edge reprofiling.

I probably wouldn't have touched it either but I sure don't blame you for giving it a refurb. I think you did a great job and it certainly looks beautiful. Don't mind us old guys who like the paper stickers :p. Now go do some chopping!

Nice work. I don't do fine finish work myself, but I appreciate it when I see it. What did you use to patinate the head?

Plumb is a favorite brand .
i'm afraid i'd left this one as found. just to have the original is kind of a kick.
but whose to say.
if you needed it for a chopping job you needed it.

good looking edge

Gotta be honest with ya mate...Although you have done a good job I would have probably just given her a wipe over and left everything else alone. Those labels and stickers really add to the character. Of course I have no idea how old your axe is but it looks like you found her in almost new and unused condition.

She's a great looking axe but I would save the do-up jobs for the neglected and abused.

Thanks, White vinnegar, red vinnegar, yellow mustard!

I do see the appeal of keeping it stock but i hated the way the handle felt and hell I just wanted something to tinker with haha
