So, I bought my first SAK recently :D. It's an Alox Settler (discontinued model I think), in silver scales and red Victorinox logo. It has a large blade and a small blade, nothing else, not even a keyring (strange, huh?). Does anyone own/know sth about this knife? Any info will be appreciated. Thanks!

Congrats on that one. It's very nice. I haven't seen this SAK in real life yet.

SAKWiki and SmartKnives have some info on the Settler.

Actually, there are more models without the keyring. The old Victorinox Soldier, alox Solo and Electrician Plus are some examples.

Thank you very much for everything! And I forgot to add that the storekeeper told me that there was only 1 Settler left in their shops and th version itself was very rare :) And also with the 2 blades it is kinda like the Peanut :) I started to like it after reading Jackknife's stories :D

Congrats!! Welcome to the SAK club.....after the first 10 or 15 you start to settle in.....

There are also smaller two blade alox and cellidor models. Like the Secretary, Excelsior and Pocket Pal. Here's my red Secretary. According to SmartKnives.com, the silver alox Secretary is still in production.

At first, when they told me they "were advised to sell knives only to 18+ people", I knew that bigger models were not allowed (she had told me before that she'd give me a smaller one because I "looked older"), I started to look for 2-blade models. There was the Settler, a Pocket Pal, 2 Wenger Eloxy's (those had a clip-point small blade) , and other 91mm plastic models with 2 blades. At first she told me I could either take an Eloxy or the Pocket Pal (and the classics of course), as they were smaller than the others. But then she called the manager (or whoever) and he allowed me to buy the Settler. That's the story :D !

Thanks everyone! And, I'd like to ask you: what oil do you use to oil your knives and how do you sharpen them?:D

Vahe.

since i rarely get nicks or chipped edges,
i use ceramic rods.
if you have never sharpen a knife before,
please try it out on an old or already ruined knife
just to get some general feel.

i do away with oiling
because i believe fine matter will stick on it.
and when it does,
flush knife joints under a jet of running tap water
then, proceed to pour or soak in warm water
to help evaporate moisture.

if you feel it requires oiling,
then you need to flush out the trapped dirt and grime frequently.
if you're preparing food,
you don't want to be tasting machine oil.
any light oil would do otherwise

I use oil that might be used on firearms. My favorite general oil is "Rem Oil" which has teflon in it. A small bottle will probably last you a long time.

If you are brand new to knives.... I think girlymann's suggestion of ceramic rods is sound. They are very easy to use and they give you a base to stick the rods in in a "V". You just slide the knife down the rods. Sharpening SAKs is very easy since the steel is fairly soft. That is one of their good qualities and selling points as you don't have to be an expert to get a good sharp edge.

Diamond bench stones work just fine too. I would get fine and very fine combination if you lean toward a diamond bench stone such as sold by DMT.

Looks awesome, congratulations on that one! The silver Alox will get pretty with age too.

Congrats on the nice find, a discontinued model that would endure time and use!

I recently came across an old rusted Tinker in my garage. I replaced it, and got the SAK bug. Can't stop buying them, they're so beautiful and functional. My friends made fun at first, but now they're buying them as fast as me. It's a true sickness, but a good one. Nice knife, yours.
