My first SAK

Hi,

After carrying a knife in my pocket for 40-some years, I finally bought my first SAK, a Super Tinker.

I must confess, I've never been very impressed by the plastic scales, the thin blades, and the seemingly light construction. I do understand that the SAK is world famous for it's quality and usability. And has a history that is virtually unparalleled.

But, I grew up on a farm, and a multi-tool was, (and still often is), a 6" slip-joint pliers in a leather pouch and a medium/large stockman slippie in your pocket. So I've had an irrational prejudice that has prevented me from owning one. It's bad enough that last night when I was paged out for weather watch, we were parked on the overpass out on the highway. The thought hit me, "Why did I replace the "real" knife in my pocket, (a large stockman), with that SAK?" Pretty ridiculous, right? (There was a lot of tornadic activity last evening. Several area towns reported light to moderate damage in the county. We spotted one touch down a couple of miles from our observation position).

So I'm going to try and carry my new SAK for at least a week. I don't know if it will do me any good. But I'm going to try and learn to appreciate the Swiss Army Knife!!

Wish me luck!!!

A couple of thoughts. First, there is no rule that says you can't carry your large stockman and a SAK at the same time. In fact, carrying more than one is highly encouraged around here. And second, be prepared for several more SAK purchases. You'll find one that is slightly better (for you) than the Super Tinker, and then another that is better than that one.

Good choice! SAK's are really good knives for the money. Blades cut really good due to the thinness of them & easy to sharpen...enjoy!

You could always try a Vic Farmer or a Pioneer/Soldier, they are slightly larger and much more rigid construction (thicker/longer blades, Aluminum handles). You might also want to look at the 111mm locking Vics.
