I think this is the right forum for this. Now I know I'm in the right sub-forum. ;)

My daughter and her boyfriend just got back from 2 weeks in Switzerland and Spain. They bought me a very nice present while they were there, the Hunter model SAK. I think this is the first SAK that I've ever owned. Purchased in Switzerland. :D

Guess I'll have to try it out as an EDC for a while.

Thanks Blues. Guess I'll need to spend more time outdoors away from the city to get the most use out of this.

Maybe my daughter is trying to give me a hint. :D

A few months ago I decided to EDC a Hunter after my last Rucksack meant an untimely demise in a paper shredder:(. Anyway, my reasons for choosing the Hunter over the Rucksack were two:
1) I wanted to try out the Vic "combo tool". This is the tool that can serve as both a can opener and bottle opener as well as the flat head screwdriver. None of my other SAKs have the combo tool
2) The gutting blade. I work as an EMT as well as other pursuits such as sailing were a blunt tipped rescue blade would be beneficial.

The only downside so far that I have found is the lack of a phillips driver. The rucksack can opener had a small flat head that worked very well as a Phillips too. The combo tool can be pressed into this role but it is very sub par IMO. In closing, I enjoy my Hunter as an EDC but I am not totally sure I wouldn't prefer my Ruck back.

One other drawback that some find is the size of the 111mm knives. I carry mine in a pocket all day, every day. I know others who don't and say it is too big for pocket carry. Everyone has their own ideas when it comes to what is "pocketable" and what requires a belt sheath.

Glad to see another Hunter user show up. IMO it is not a very common choice. It is not rare, and many get one for their collection, BUT how many come out of the drawer daily is very few.

I hope this quick intro helps. Enjoy the forums.

I normally don't post on this site... However, i will chime in on this SAK.... As a "first" SAK this one is hard to beat. It may even start an obsession. I think that this is a great outdoor choice and edc.
SAK also makes the Fireman model (both the flat head and small "phillips" can and bottle openers plus a larger "gutting"/seatbelt blade). I carry the Fireman in my hunting pack. It is a little bit heavier than the hunter. The hunter is a better pocket edc choice (due to the lighter weight and slimmer profile).

The moral of the story is its better to have both just to know you have the option!!!!

Congrats on the first VIC SAK.... Hopefully and doubtfully it won't be your last!!!

I liked it but found the Outrider and I think I gave my Hunter to my Dad if I remember right! It is a good knife as all all SAKs are.

congarts for your first SAK! thankfully it wont be your last!

make sure you get the soldier alox while you still can... its highly recomended by me... solid, sweet, and just plain usefull..

just bought several saks also today... an explorer (I love its usefull tools selections), another supertinker, waiter, bantam, nylon lumberjack and orange alox classic to put in my wallet since its thin enough...

saks is just plain addictive!

My first SAK was a Camper. I have a Camo Hunter and it has a philips screwdriver as well... This is the first of many mate!

That's probably a pretty fair statement, but assuming you spend more time in the city than out, it's possible that this particular SAK won't necessarily serve your needs very well .... IMHO. ;) This being your first SAK, and a gift from your daughter, and being bought in Switzerland ..... it will no doubt always be a special knife to you. All I'm sayin' is that there may be other SAK's better suited for carry in the city. Perhaps this knife will pique your interest and you'll do a little research into what other SAK's are out there ..... they're great knives! ;)

Thanks for all the kind words and recommendations for future SAKs. I appreciate it.

+1 on the Soldier. You might also want to take a peek at the alox Cadet, very useful selection of basic tools, weighs next to nothing and disappears into your pocket.

Very cool and now you have a great excuse to spend more time in the field. :D Double win.

Nice Sak, it's always more special when somebody buys it for you isn't it. Use it in good health.
