My first sale made me...

I made my first sale as a knifemaker last night. And I have to say, it made me realize how great some of my friends are

I've only been doing this for a few months, and after convincing my parents I wasn't "fabricating dangerous edged weapons" in the garage... they embraced the fact that I found a hobby that was keeping my occupied and away from video games and just being a couch potato. Not all of my friends know what I do, or how I do it. And generally I get a very inquisitive, confused and baffled reaction from people when I tell them I make knives....

Anyways... I was having several people over yesterday for an end of summer BBQ and my one friend showed up early so I gave him a little tour of my working area and tools, and showed him what I've made so far. He was blown away, and had no idea how much work was involved in the process. He was very impressed by everything and thought it was really cool that I was doing it as a hobby. I then proceeded to show him the finished knives I had for sale up in the exchange, and he began asking about prices. He then decided to buy one for the following reason:

"I think it's awesome when people find a passion that they really enjoy. I don't know much about knives but if I can support a friend doing what he loves I'm all for it. And in 30 years if we lose track of each other I will still have it to remind me of you."

I was absolutely floored. Now I'm going to be teaching him how to sharpen it and take care of it so it doesn't rust.

As I said... it made me realize how great my friends can be. And it meant a lot to me that he showed his support like that.

I just thought I'd share that experience,

Thanks for reading =)

Very Cool Jonathan, sounds like you have a great bunch of people around you! Congrats on listing your first knife on BF, I was there not long ago at all. Nervous and excited at the same time. I am going to go check it out now!

Cool!

Maybe you can get him interested in knife making, and have some company in the shop.

Nice Jonathan! That is a great story. I know a couple of my first sales could be attributed to someone I know trying to encourage me. It's good to have people like that in your life. Nice job, keep it up buddy!

I was going to reply to this directly, but I think it deserves a new thread...

Edit: Here.

Thank you guys =)

And Tait yes I did keep pictures, it was actually up for sale on the exchange here so the thread is closed but still exists here

I think it's time to take the "Wannabe" off from your title "Wannabe Knifemaker."

Seriously.

I'm flattered tait :D

I feel I've come a long way in a short time thanks to all the great people on the forum. I still have tons to learn however, and I'm only about 12 knives in. Perhaps I'll think of a catchier title for myself ;)

Congratulations Johnathan! You will go far and I hope to see your work a long time in the future and reminisce that I was reading bladeforums one night and Johnathan Wolff posted about his first sale. Keep making your own dreams

Congrats Wolff, now you'll never stop dreamin about knives, my first knife i traded for 3 new milgard windows for my house craziest feeling ever, i won my wifes support that day! Anyhow johnathan great job, camping trips in populated type camp settings are great places to have knives ready for quick sales, but word of mouth from friends is how it starts.

Congrats their is nothing like the feeling you get with the sale of the first one! Hopefully your first sale will inspire you to a new level!:thumbup:
