I made my first sale as a knifemaker last night. And I have to say, it made me realize how great some of my friends are
I've only been doing this for a few months, and after convincing my parents I wasn't "fabricating dangerous edged weapons" in the garage... they embraced the fact that I found a hobby that was keeping my occupied and away from video games and just being a couch potato. Not all of my friends know what I do, or how I do it. And generally I get a very inquisitive, confused and baffled reaction from people when I tell them I make knives....
Anyways... I was having several people over yesterday for an end of summer BBQ and my one friend showed up early so I gave him a little tour of my working area and tools, and showed him what I've made so far. He was blown away, and had no idea how much work was involved in the process. He was very impressed by everything and thought it was really cool that I was doing it as a hobby. I then proceeded to show him the finished knives I had for sale up in the exchange, and he began asking about prices. He then decided to buy one for the following reason:
"I think it's awesome when people find a passion that they really enjoy. I don't know much about knives but if I can support a friend doing what he loves I'm all for it. And in 30 years if we lose track of each other I will still have it to remind me of you."
I was absolutely floored. Now I'm going to be teaching him how to sharpen it and take care of it so it doesn't rust.
As I said... it made me realize how great my friends can be. And it meant a lot to me that he showed his support like that.
I just thought I'd share that experience,
Thanks for reading =)
