My first Scandi(WIP)

This is the 11th knife I've ground and I've failed a few of those trying to do a decent Scandi bevel. Luckily I was able to salvage most of them by blending everything together into a convex. I was starting to question if I should even be trying to make knives. This is a small success in the scheme of knife making but I'm happy about it.

Anyway, I just got the bevels done on this blade and I'm pretty excited that I finally got it right(or at least decent). The only thing I'll change with the next one is I will probably try and make it less acute. I think it's around 10 degrees and I'd prefer it to be at 11 or even 12. Things should be pretty much down hill for finishing the knife. It goes out to heat treat in the next couple days. I'll try and post more pics once it's finished, if i don't screw it up lol.

3in edge(may just a tad shorter)
3/16in thick



 
I got all the pre-heat treat work done today. I decided to thin it out a little since it's gonna be a smaller knife and not something that will be seeing hard use. I'd rather have it cut better. That also kind of made the bevel look like a more traditional Scandi grind. I finished it on a 120 grit. I might take it higher when it gets back, I might not. I was thinking about putting a little divot in the handle in the index finger location but will probably just leave it as is. By leaving it kind of round I'm thinking it will have the same grip no matter how you hold it and that will be more consistent.

If anyone notices something that could be improved please let me know. I'm new to this and I really value learning from everyone here.

The other knife is a 10in bladed convex chopper I did a week or so ago. I still need to grind a little bit off the handle, hence the black marker on it.

I like it better after the re grind ,but to me the top pin hole is too near the ricasso ,plunge area of the knife.Nice clean grinds though well done

Thanks! Now that you mention it I agree, the top hole is too close to the plunge. Maybe I should do another one a little lower and just cover it up with the handle...

Hell, maybe I could just recess the inside of the scales where the top pin is and have the top pin inside so it doesn't show...



ETA I just made another hole below the top hole and I think that will be a better location for the top pin. I'll just cover up the top hole with the scales. I might try and putting a hidden pin in there just for kicks. Couldn't hurt I wouldn't think, as long as it was somewhat loose in there.

I like the classic hidden tang construction of a scandi.
The handle shape is quite subtile, but more complex the you'd think.
The spine and edge aren't parralel but taper slightly towards the point. This line continues in the handle
 
I like it so far, the scandi is quickly becoming my favorite. Please post a pic when it's done so we can see the final product.
 
Thanks for the kind words. As far as the shape, I wanted something utilitarian and simple. Also wanted something that would provide a consistent grip to matter how you held it. I thought about putting finger groove on it but I'm glad I didn't.

I should get it back tomorrow(today) from heat treat and am excited to finish it. I've been making a bunch of micarta for this first batch. I will definitely post pics when it's done.
 
I forgot to put up pics of the finished knife so here they are. I'm real happy with how it turned out. The handle is very comfortable. I ended up using some brown/natural micarta that I scored from one of our own, Nathan the Machinist(thanks a bunch brother!).

Nice job!!!

An ingraving instructor once told our class "material wasted is directly proportional to knowledge and experience gained". If you don't want to screw anything up just stay in bed all day. You are learning and experincing something with each blade you make. Enjoy the learning curve. It's a great ride
