My first Sebenza and a question

I just received my first Sebenza. It is a small classic with African Blackwood Inlay. Very pretty and simple. I like the ergonomics of how it feels in my hand and the fit and finish are superb. This is a pre-owned knife but it is in excellent, all most new condition.

My question is are they all this tight and hard to close? I am used to using Benchmade knives with the Axis lock and its inherent smoothness. The Sebenza opens up fairly smoothly but not as easily as my BM's. However, I just seem to have a hard time getting my fat thumb in to move the frame lock for closing the knife Maybe it is just something I need to get used to.

What is your experience?

Compared to an axis lock it's going to feel stiff. Solid/smooth is the way I describe it. It also takes a while to get accustomed to the thumb stud. EDC it for a while and your either gonna love it or hate it.

The axis will feel smoother. Take it apart (See sticky for details) and clean it if you feel like it. Then just carry it and use it. That will smooth it out. Mine took much longer then any other knife to smooth out and break in due to the lose tolerance.

Ps. Congratulations on one sweet knife!

lube it and flip it,they get super smooth i have purchased 2 new largs sebbs this month a little liquid graphite and toping it with oil, they flip fast................

It will smooth out, but at the same time, you will get used to your Sebenza. I remember having a sore spot on my thumb by all the opening/closing; went away in two weeks or so...now, it feels like an extention to my hand

Thanks for the help. I am already getting a little used to it after playing with the knife all afternoon. I'm glad that my knife isn't different from others. It is a solid feeling knife, no doubt. I think that I will get used to it.

If it is used it wouldn't hurt to take it apart,
clean and lube it. There may be some old gunk in it.
It should be working nice and smooth eventually.

I have the same knife, except mine's a 21 instead of a classic.
It's super smooth.

I'll echo the comments of other posters - take it apart, clean/lube. If it's hard to disengage the framelock, maybe rub a pencil on the contact surface of it while you have the scales apart.

I also went from an axis lock knife to a sebenze. When I first got it, it seemed to feel harder to open. I then relized I was pushing UP on the thumstud (like I would with my mini grip) insted of pushing more OUT, or more like away from the handle. I now like the feeling of the sebenza much more than the axis knives.

You have my favourite Sebenza. It is definitely pretty, but with that nice dark hardwood and the gold studs (and I assume gold spacer?), not really all that "simple." In my eyes, it is embellished perfectly and just enough. Anything more and it would be too busy, I think. Nice choice!

As the others have said, it just takes time. I went to be sebenza coming from Spyderco/Benchmades. Although I do sometimes miss the action of the axis, or the quickness of the Delica 4 wave, they just don't give me the satisfaction of the solid "thunk" of the benza when its open.

I've had mine since December, and it is much smoother now. :D

Remember that to open a Sebenza you push the stud "up" rather than "out" at a right angle to the handle.

If it is really hard to close, check that the clip isn't bearing too strongly on the lock bar. If it is, it can be straightened out a bit to lower the pressure.
