Browsing these forums really made me want to give the Sebenza a try. I watched plenty of reviews on the 21 vs 25 and even considered the Umnumzaan after seeing it favorably compared to the two. I was unsure if I wanted a small or large for EDC. The only way to settle this was to drive ~1 hour to the nearest CRK dealer and check out all 3 in person.

I ruled out the small 21 pretty quickly as I am used to EDC'ing larger knives. The Umnumzaan opening system confused me in person. I understand the easy way to open it now, but when I was at the shop I initially had a hard time which put me off a little bit. That initial confusion and the desire to get a Sebenza in the first place left me between the 21 Large and the 25.

I handled both and liked the extra finger choil on the 25. It felt very comfortable to me. The pivot bushing vs traditional pivot doesn't bother me, I actually think I prefer having it user adjustable. Since I've never had a pivot bushing Sebenza it's not something that I'm going to miss. The pivot action on the 25 was smooth and took some effort to deploy. Same with the 21.

I like the ceramic ball in the lockbar on the 25. It sounds and feels nice when it locks. I can also appreciate that this is a newer innovation that will probably extend the life of the lockbar. Narrowed down to the 25. Next problem. I saw there were two 25 models at the shop, the plain 25 with blue thumbstuds and a micarta inlay 25 with silver thumbstuds. I spent some time gripping both versions to decide which felt better in my hand. Ultimately I walked out of the shop with this:

It's been about 4 days now and I couldn't be happier! First thing I did when I got home was loosen the pivot to the point where the blade drops on it's own when you release the lockbar. Took me a second to figure out how the pivot worked with both sides having adjustable screws, lol. I now have it with the minimum resistance from the detent and no play at all when locked up.

I played with the knife a bit that night and noticed the lanyard standoff screws starting to back out. Uh oh! I was kind of expecting that to be a possibility based on the reviews. I backed out all 4 handle screws, applied the provided Loctite, and made sure they were all finger tight. I also backed out the pivot adjustment and put some Loctite there for good measure. It's been 3 days with no movement on any of the screws, and I've been playing with the knife a fair bit so I don't think it's going to happen again.

Overall, while not overwhelmed at first, I really find the simplicity and solidness of the Sebenza 25 growing on me. I'm glad I listened to all the hype and picked one up. Thanks guys!

Great review. These knives tend to grow on you. Or you grow into them. [emoji13]

Great first choice, glad to hear you were able to handle each knife, sometimes that makes all the difference.
You did good, enjoy it!!!!! I might even have one like that :)

A very nice choice for your first Sebenza. I enjoy my micarta 25 but haven't used it as hard as my PJ 25...yet.
Smart move putting Loctite on the screws. I haven't had any issues with mine since doing that.

Congrats on your first. The micarta was a great choice. I think it adds to the looks as well as improving the grip. Enjoy!

congrats, 25 was my first as well. I see a 21 and zaan in your future.

Lol, I have to resist the urge. I am very curious about the Umnumzaan now that I've looked into it more due to my initial exposure. I think the 25 has enough similar features to the 21 and the Umnum that I can convince myself it doesn't need company. Now a very different knife like a XM-18 or 562CF, that might be a different story!

I totally agree. To me it definitely looks and feels better in the hand.

Very nice. I've been on the fence for a long time now. But usually when I have myself convinced, the money is not there. Oh, and not to push or anything...but....I just got a 562CF in and it is A-maze-ing!. I think they'd make a perfect pair. Seb in one pocket, and 562 in the other. ;)

Good choice:) The inlay shape of the 25 was hideous to me at first but is growing on me, it is nice to be able to handle the knives before you buy them!

I thought they didn't look as good when I saw them on some youtube videos, but in person they look really nice. Definitely helped to handle and see them all in person. I wish there were a closer dealer, I had to go ~50 miles to find one.

Congratulations and welcome. Have the 25 and two 21's. Like both, with a very slight edge going to the 25's robust construction. Also appreciate the 21's classic operation and heritage...;-)

You are screwed man, my prediction is you have another CRK before 2016

+1. I bought all three of mine; a 21 UG, a 21 micarta insingo, and an umnumzaan, all within a few months of seriously discovering CRK's. I'm currently planning/saving for a 21 micarta with raindrop damascus, a plain jane serrated 21, and a 25 micarta with ladder damascus.

Glad to hear you're enjoying your 25. Well done.:)

Nice grab!!! After purchasing my first CRK which was an Umnumzann. I then bought a lg 21 tanto and a lg 21 carbon fiber within Six months of my initial investment. I'm patiently saving up for a lg 25. Congrats and welcome to the addiction.

Congrats on the new knife .. I totally agree with you on the the way it grows on you , the more you use it . The 2 knives I decided were the ones I wanted were the sebenza 21 w/wood inlays and a hinderer xm 18 bowie grind . I got my sebenza , totally in love with it . And the bond grows stronger each day . I'm half way to saving for the xm 18 . But I keep thinking , would I like the sebenza 25 more ? Would the 25 be redundant, since I already have the 21? I do have the zt 562cf , that you mentioned . Great knife , great steel ,although it is very hard . I had a micro chip in mine , very easy to sharpen out though . That the ballance you have to consider, edge retention to toughness . If you get a zt 562cf , one suggestion I'd make . The are notorious for the pivot screw loosening. Loctite won't won't work , probably because the shock the flipping action exerts. The answer thread tape . I put thread tape on mine when I first got it and it's rock solid . Another question in my mind is would the xm 18 be enough of an upgrade to the 562 , to justify it's purchase ? ... ahhhh the world of us knife obsessed people ... the world just don't understand ..
