Well, I finally purchased my frist sebenza. It is a Large Regular with BG-42 Steel made in mid 1998. The knife is "Scary Sharp", by far the sharpest knife I have ever come across. It is as smooth as silk opening and closing. Fit and finish is second to none. A very simple design executed to perfection. Truely A Work Of Art !!! I would like to thank everyone that responded to my thread a few weks ago, I read every single responce along with every thread related to a sebenza and they all helped me make my choice. Though, I will have to agree with everyone, this one will not be my last !!!

Nice score! And you are right that it probably won't be your last. For me, it certainly wasn't :o.

I just got my first Seb as well for christmas, and I completely agree on the notion that it wont be alone for long. My addiction to knives started with Benchmade, being a balisong enthusiast, I thought it couldnt get any better.

My limit for a knife used to be $200, which has led to a healthy collection of Benchmades. I thought that the value was very good for how much I was paying. Then I got my Seb. I feel like an instant convert.

I had this whole list of Benchmades that I was looking at, even thinking about picking up my first Spyderco, and all I want is Reeve! Even though I pay almost twice as much, I dont lose nearly the value in my use of the knife.

Safe Queen is a foriegn term to me so far, and I love using every knife I own. This Sebbie has already helped me take down the x-mas tree :D, break all the cardboard down into recycle bin friendly pieces, and many other random tasks that I could throw at it.

I love this knife, and look forward to adding many more to my rotation as soon as I can.

How did you succeed to get one with BG-42 steel?

I am trying it hardly with no success. Large or small, regular or classic.

At the moment I have a small regular with S30V steel, but I am a BG-42 fan.

I got my first Sebenza on ebay for $280 including shipping. I asked the seller many questions about the knife and also emailed "Heather" at Chris Reeve Knives as well. The BG-42 blades are not marked. The numbers on the handle scales state B 99 which makes the knife made in mid 99. The Sebenza is a Large Regular. The seller also had a Mnandi that ended up going for $315 including shipping. I almost got that one too, but would rather spend that on a small sebenza I think or possible another of chris reeves one piece knives. I know I got a deal for sure. th knife still has the factory edge and is "scary sharpe" I cut up many cardboard boxes after the holidays and the knife still effortlessly shaves hair. Its unreal !!!

Here is a Sebenza Time Line emailed to me from Chris Reeve. Maybe this will help someone !!! "We began with ATS 34 and changed to BG 42 in October of 1996. In January of 2002 we began using S30V and continue to use it today. The ATS 34 and BG 42 do not have markings. We marked the S30V blades with an S and recently with a C if they were Classic 2000 blades and not the standard Sebenza profile. Since we have discontinued the standard profile (except for our annual Limited Editions) we just mark the blades with a S. If your blade is not marked you may get an indication of the steel by the markings on the side of the handles. For a very long time (we do not have an exact date) we marked each handle run with an A, B or C depending on if it was the first, second or third run of the and the final two digits of the year. Example A02 for handles made in the beginning of 2002. This may give you an indication of the blade material, but is not a guarantee. I know Sebenza owners love to swap out faces and some even try to fit different blades especially on the second hand market. I hope that answers your questions. Please let me know if you have any more."

Congrats. They're a great knife aren't they.

Won't be long now before you'll be telling us about your first custom ......... :D
