Have you checked out Benchmade, if your looking for a folder the griptillian is a good price. Thats just my opinion though.

I'd go with the Carbon V SRK. The best prices I've seen on the net for Cold Steel are at cheaperthandirt.com. May be cheaper out there, but I'm unaware of it.

the srk i found at cheaperthan dirt was 40 bucks. muck less than in the cold catalog. anyone know anything about the sog agent? maybe that will be my second purchase

Well I am a sog fan, and the government afent is a nice looking knife... I cant remember if ive held it or not. The cold steel will be cheaper but im not sure if the metal is as good. The srk is basically just a sharpened hunk of steel. I bought one for my brother cause it was good price for the amount of knife you get. I feel that the sog would be a little higher end though.

Go for the SRK. CarbonV, while not being the best carbon steel in my opinion, is going to be way tougher and hold an edge better than the AUS6 that SOG uses on it's knives. Personally, I think SOG has some wonderful designs, but I really wish they would upgrade to a better steel for their knives. I'd pay twice the price for a Nothwest Ranger (or is it Hunter...I get confused) if it had an S30V blade.

I'm more or less a knife newbie myself. But any such questions must be asked in light of intended use, I think. What are you wanting the knife for?

I have an SRK and I love it. It is tough as hell, and reasonably light weight for a knife that size (may not matter to you, but I like 'em light as possible for carrying). The handle is comfortable, and very grippy, however I hear that it wears out fast... The steel is awsome. Take and holds an edge for ever! It is so thick, and steeply ground that it probably isn't the best slicer out there, and all my folders will out slice it, but it can always be reground. I really like the kydex sheath that comes with it. I would strongly recomend this knife. I got mine for $48 from www.wholesalehunter.com. If you found it for $40, all the better. That is even better than what Cold Steel sell their seconds for.For that price it would be hard to beat if what you want is a REALLY strong knife.

justine, can I ask what you intend to use the knife for? I got started in knives here at this forum and there's some great advice available. It helps to know what interests you about those knives, what you might use them for, will you carry them, etc...

i live on long island so carrying a 6 inch blade is definitely out. i just wanted a knife to take on trips (camping/hiking) when i get sick of looking at concrete. i was also thinking about taking up bowhunting. i'm 26, is it too late to start that? archery probably takes a real long time to get good enough to hunt with.
