Howdy all. I recently finished my first leather sheath for my Mineral Mountain White River Bowie. Well, actually it's my second sheath, but the first one turned out so sloppy, it will be hidden in the depths of my closet forever.
First off, the White River Bowie is about the coolest knife I've ever seen. It's a monster work horse that has wonderful asthetics (to my eye anyway). It came with a Kydex sheath that is very nice in it's own right. But I've had a bug to start working with leather, so I decided to give sheath-making a shot. Here is the result:
I wet-molded the cowhide and handstitched it with a welt (sp?) sandwiched between the halves of leather. I then dyed it oxblood red and airbrushed a black dye semi-evenly, trying to give it a weathered look by contouring the wet mold reliefs.
I wanted to incorprorate a leather thong system for wearing it on a belt, so developed a system of eyelets that would hold the cord in place. Along the back, I wove the cord up-and-down between the horizontal wrapping, so that I can carry it vertical or horizontally. I works pretty good and this giant knife stays fairly secure, without much wobble.
I'm pretty happy with the results. It's not quite as perfect as I'd like (the stitching is a tad sloppy in one area), but all in all I'm kind of proud of it.
Constructive criticism is appreciated. Thanks!
