My first sheath, its Mora, and charcloth

This is my first stab at sheathmaking. I gave it a try because the plastic sheaths that come with Moras are so utterly craptastic, and I loved the knife so much I knew it deserved better. Pictured with my no-name firesteel and a couple pieces of my first batch of t-shirt charcloth.

Looks good! Much more appropriate than the plastic, especially for a wooden-handled Mora.

How's the charcloth working out?

The charcloth works great, catches sparks from the firesteel easily. I managed to light some shredded kleenex with the charcloth, but that's about it. As you can see it's not the best time of year to be looking for tinder... especially since I live in the city.

I have plans to take a day trip into the bush later in December, after finals. Hope to impress my friends by building a fire without matches or a lighter. If the charcloth won't work, there's always vaseline and cotton balls. I have *NO* trouble with those. They're so cheaty. ;)

The sheath is far more functional too. It fits on my belt and the knife does not fall out if you shake it upside down, yet it pulls out without much effort.

You're off to a good start. If you get the time and space to work later on, you could get into making sheaths for other people. At least you know now you never have to settle for an inferior product. :D

I doubt this is something I'd do even as a side job, but I'll probably make a couple for my friends.

Actually, I was pleasantly surprised at how well it turned out. I was expecting my first attempt to be a throwaway, but it turned out to be perfectly serviceable. It's even got a really cool "flaw" that you can't really see in the pictures... there's a scar in the leather. As in, the cow got cut while it was alive and healed. :)

Nice sheath! Well done!
That my next step, i just recently finished two Mora kit knives myself.
I have wooden liners made but i need to get leather from Tandy and some odds and ends from Lee Valley before i can do the sheath.
I know you can live without wooden liners but i though i'd try something different this time.
:)

Thanks for all the compliments!

This one is without liners. If you use wooden liners, will the sheath still have good retention without a strap?
